Darth Vader Force/Action

By CDP 2000, in X-Wing Rules Questions

According to the card "after you perform an action, you may spend 1 force to perform an action". Darth comes with three force.

Two questions:

1. At the beginning of each turn, do all three of Darth's force recharge; Or just one per turn?

2. Could Darth, in one turn perform an action (say, gain a focus) and then do that 3 more times (effectively gaining 4 focus)?

Thanks for the help.

1. Just 1 during the End Phase

2. You can only do a specific action once in a round.

He can do different actions, however.

So I believe he could spend 2 force charges to do a target lock and a barrel roll after the focus. If you added Supernatural Reflexes, he could use a force token after activation to do a boost (suffering 1 damage), so it is possible for him to do 4 (different) actions [but not the same action twice in any combination].

[Unless his ability is also an action of sorts, and thus can't be used more than once? But I don't think that is the case, and its triggering off each successive action so it doesn't violate One Per Opportunity either, I think --- Focus allows him to spend a Force to do Target Lock, then Target Lock allows him to spend a Force to do Barrel Roll, etc]

To elaborate on the (correct) answers @Innese provided...

  1. No matter how many sources of Force Charges it may have, a ship only recovers one Force Charge per end phase. For example, Kanan Jarrus (VCX-100), carrying both Ezra (Gunner) and Maul (Crew), might have a cumulative Force rating of 4, but even though there are three Force-sensitive characters on the ship, it still only recovers one Force Charge at the end of the turn (Maul, of course, provides other ways to recover Force Charges, but that's another situation entirely).
  2. When performing actions, a ship can only perform a particular given action once per round, no matter how many extra actions it might otherwise get. Darth Vader could Focus, then spend a Force Charge to Barrel Roll, then spend a Force Charge to Target Lock... but he could never Focus then Focus then Focus. The same is true for certain upgrade cards... you may use Supernatural Reflexes to perform a pre-move Barrel Roll action (and Vader can even spend Force Charges to perform extra actions after that, before he moves!), but that means he couldn't perform another Barrel Roll action later that turn.

And to elaborate on the elaboration:

  1. Any charge pool (either normal or force) with the '1-up' arrow (so written Icon charge : 1 or Icon force :1 ) recovers one charge in the end phase.
    • It's a standard convention in the game, so theoretically a ship's shield score could have a to give it innate regeneration (watch this space for epic ships whenever they get around to updating them).
    • The thing is, many pilots and upgrades have separate charge pools (if an X-wing has Torpedoes, Afterburners, and and Elusive, it has three separate charge pools of charge tokens, each of which are drawn from by a different upgrade, and each of which are spent and recovered - if possible - separately).
    • Force doesn't inherently work differently - what is different is that all crew and gunners with a force score (Kanan, Palpatine, etc) say Icon force : + 1 on the card instead of just Icon force :1 .
    • That means they're not establishing a separate force pool, they're adding +1 and the '1-up' arrow to the pilot's own force pool (which starts at 0 without a '1-up' arrow if they don't have one listed, as is the case for most pilots), just like a shield upgrade increases the pilots own shield score by 1.
    • Since the pilot's force charge stat either has a '1-up' arrow or not, it doesn't matter how many separate upgrades are granting it one, just like it doesn't matter how many separate upgrades are making a particular manoeuvre blue.
  2. Whilst you can only ever perform the same action once, note that it's possible to gain the effect sometimes without performing the action.
    • If a rule says 'gain a focus token' or 'acquire a lock', that's different from performing a focus action or a target lock action.
    • You can gain (or be assigned) a focus token as many times as various upgrades and pilot abilities in your squad allow you to, provided only one per turn is that ship performing a focus action (and having done so doesn't stop you performing that action). Soontir Fel is a good example of this:
    • Swz07-soontir-fel.png
    • Because he's just gaining the token, not getting it from an action, he can do so if stressed, or if he's already focused.
    • Similarly, there are quite a few upgrades which instruct you to 'acquire a lock', which is different to a target lock action and is possible even if your ship doesn't normally have the target lock action. Tarkin is an example:
    • Grand_Moff_Tarkin_Crew.png
    • Finally, tractor tokens can force you to barrel roll - even if you've already performed a barrel roll action that turn.

It would be really great if those were available the same way emoticons are available. It would also be great if there were easier means and multiple means of adding card images to posts than hot-linking.

While I completely agree about the icons, the card images are a lot better now since there are pretty decent images of the cards that can be linked to in FFG's official squad builder.
