Thoughts on the 1.4 FD Laser Cannon?

By Undeadguy, in Star Wars: Legion

I've never played them, but I've played against them. If deployed correctly they can be a real nuisance, if deployed wrong they can be a useless heap of wasted points. I would certainly give them a try.

If you use 2 or more I would give you this advice, on objectives that split the battlefield evenly, I would advise choosing 2/3 of the mat and trying to own that area with them. Splitting them up across the whole mat may seem like a good idea, but I've found that exploiting the side that got less troops and killing it quickly renders one of them useless, and makes capturing objectives much easier.

So far I have only fielded one once. The game ended up being Long March with Intercept the Transmissions. As others have said, I was able to place it in a position that it could cover the objective at the edge of my deployment zone and cover the objective in the middle. Because of the terrain we were using, the 1.4 FD was in position to completely cover an approach toward the middle objective along one long side of the battlefield, as the Empire would have to move into its range to get around a building. The Imperial player never bothered to try to go that way, shutting down one lane of possible approach and allowing my other units to focus on the others. This also allowed me to send a couple of unopposed units along this side and push deep towards the Imperial player's deployment zone to threaten the objective on his side. The Imperial player had to shift units to defend that flank, weakening his push toward the center objective, which I was able to control all game (along with the objective one my side).

During the game, the 1.4 FD only got to fire once, when Boba Fett moved into Range 4, and it managed to put some wounds on him (and a Rebel Trooper unit and Han finished him off). While I might have liked to have fired it more, it certainly shaped the battlefield.

Can you explain this? Paticularly your first paragraph? What is "it?"

Sorry i was replying quickly from my lunch break.

Ive only been subjected to (ie played against) the turrets in this case two of them using rapid reinforcements to get into good firing positions and equippied with barrage gens and hq uplink. They were pretty effective. They can easily route core units that arent in command range and they do enough damage that you have to take them out quickly.

In X-Wing, turn 0 I.e. Setup and asteroid placement is a much bigger deal for some squads/ships than others. I see the 1.4fd as being along those lines. Missions, Deployment, Condition and initial setup are all more important. However, the unit you get is quite good for it's cost.

I love it. Even naked.

Makes for a great distracter that your opponent focuses on.

@Docgimmethenews I wish more people would analyze units with this kind of strategy in mind. I have played in one tournament and I went 1:2. So you can take what I say for what it’s worth. But so many Legion players are focused on points cost versus points destroyed that they forget about the strategy of the game. Every shot fired at a 1.4D is a shot NOT fired at a rebel trooper unit that can stay alive and capture an objective. Similarly, if you park you laser cannon in a lane and it doesn’t shoot all game because he Imperials walk around it... then you have successfully used it to control space.

I’m not saying it’s the best thing ever. I’m just saying it’s not so simple as “80 points wasted because I didn’t kill any units.” I played a casual game against an ATST. Didn’t try to kill it and won the game. People always say the best strategy is to ignore it. But you can’t ignore it. I spent every move figuring out how to keep my troops moving toward the objectives without getting blown to pieces.

I don’t know. Maybe I’d be a better player if I worried more about kills versus point cost. But the game feels deeper than that to me.

When they say ignore it, they mean dont waste your time trying to Ion or destroy it.
