Chewbacca (Crew/Resistance)

By shaunmerritt, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Question for the masses because this came up at game night last night. Wanted to get a consensuses to see if we got it right.

So Chewbacca reads: After a friendly ship at range 0-3 is dealt 1 damage card , recover 1 charge.

Does this trigger when Chewbacca is dealt any amount of damage cards OR only when he is dealt a single damage card?

The center piece of the conversation is about the "dealt 1 damage card."

One side said that he just needs to be dealt cards and can trigger off the first, the other said it is specific on the amount of cards.

Thoughts?

He triggers every time a friendly ship at range 0-3 is dealt 1 damage card. So if a friendly ship at range 0-3 is dealt 2 damage cards, Chewbacca would be triggered 2 times, once for each damage card.

damage is always dealt one at a time, no matter the amount of damage (page 8 of the rules reference). this means that chewbacca recovers a charge for every damage card a ship is dealt, up to his maximum capacity of two charges, even if that damage is from a single attack, bomb detonation, a direct hit from a rolling a crit after flying over debris or what ever.

please note that chewbacca only recovers charges from damage cards being dealt, so if the friendly ship takes damage to its shields, he does not recover any charges.

Thank you for the input. We were getting hung up on why the card says "dealt 1" and not "dealt a" card. Seems like they put the number 1 there for a reason, but we played it as anytime he is dealt a card, it triggers. Wasn't sure if anyone heard otherwise or ran into a similar issue.

You did it correctly. This question also came up on Joph Seastriker's ability, which is worded similarly.

Whenever a damage card is dealt, chewie recovers a charge (which, at least the first time, is all he can do since he'll still have one at setup). The key thing is that, as @meffo says, shield tokens are removed and damage is dealt one at a time, pausing (in theory) to see if anything triggers off each one before moving to the next.
