Hi All,

I have been busy working on some miniatures for my kids so I’m not making a heck of a lot of progress on Legion minis. But I did blitz through the Emperor’s Royal Guard unit, pictured here with their primed overlord:

(warning - I applied a “vivid warm” phone filter to make up for my suspect lighting)

I primed these in black and then did a gray zenithal highlight. I should have done a larger gray highlight then a white zenithal because the effect is pretty severe. I tried airbrushing red over the primer and while it worked it wasn’t very vivid. So I brushed on red highlights, which made it much brighter. Touched up the weapons, did the bases in gray and then varnished with matte varnish followed by brushing on a gloss to the helmets.

I should probably also mention I used a purple wash in the undergarments sleeves and legs.

Here’s a shot showing the airbrushes red and one that’s been highlighted with the same red afterwards.

Thanks a lot. I’ve been worrying about their fur so I’m glad someone likes it. My intention was definitely to make him seem more senior.

I primed with Vallejo brown primer and then directly used an army painter dark tone wash to darken it up and get in the recesses.

Then I did a couple of dry brushes using a brown mix that I can’t remember the exact formula. I gave it a mid brown wash because it didn’t have enough warm tones. Then the “gray” hair is actually deck tan (I think) very lightly dry brushed in strategic locations.

The details and the color choices for the accessories on your wookie are awesome. I really like the overall look of your Royal Guards. I really like the "in progress" picture of your Royal Guards. Something about that darker look I really like.

Okay so I got Palpatine finished and figured I’d add him to the thread. He’s such a simple paint I took a chance and took the base in a fun direction.

I painted his cloak in a mix of Vallejo German Gray and Royal Blue. I mixed in some more royal blue for highlights but you really can’t tell in the photos.

The lightening on the base was done with green gray, then sky gray, then white to try to create a gradient. I then put army painter game ink blue over top. The ink was too dark so I used a brush to push it around and uncover some of the underlying white. I’m sure those of you with artistic talent could do the idea much better but I really like how it worked out.

Awesome job. The base is a great touch. Looking forward to what is next.

I couldn’t think of mich to do with him and I am not entirely happy with how he turned out. But I feel like he is recognizable as Chewbacca and not just “Brown Wookie with Bowcaster.”

They all look great! These are the units I started with as well.

Great job on alk your Wookie Warriors and Chewbacca. They look great. These in my opinion are the best FFG Star Wars sculpts to date. I wasn't actually thrilled to see them in Legion at first but seeing them painted up I am looking forward to painting mine even more. Thanks.

I tend to agree they are the nicest sculpts. They are packed with interesting detail, and as always I learned a lot painting them.

If you batch paint these it’s probably pretty simple, but I painted each one individually to try to make them a bit more varied. I primed mine in brown, but if I get a second unit I will prime in white, gray or black and then choose a different base coat for each one. Then I will build a highlight color from that base to dry brush on. As it was, I was trying to highlight each one differently woth the same brown primer as a base and it became a hassle.

The dry brushing vastly improves the look of the fur compared to basecoating and washing. You can also modify the dry brush color to highlight different areas. I wasn’t able to layer the drybrushing very well, but maybe a more skilled practitioner could have multiple layers. There are some areas of fur that pick up the dry brush that really shouldn’t and it helps to go back over these woth the original color. I made this hard on myself by basecoating with the brown primer since I don’t have a color match for it. I’d also recommend doing all the fur, including the dry brush and wash and being happy with it before painting the details. It’s just to hard to drybrush and avoid hitting other parts of the model. This means some care is required for the details because you can’t easily correct mistakes on the fur.

The bandolier details are a bit repetitive and annoying, but the rest of the detail work was really fun to play around with. It gives each model some character and if you just paint them cleanly it will look very good. My only complaint about the sculpts is that trying to paint the facial details is really challenging. I couldn’t come up woth a good approach so I settled for black/gray noses and mouths and that’s about it.

Yes I picked up 2 packs and I plan on having 8 unique looking Wookies. I will paint all the armor with a basic silver and use the Citadel washes to color the armor. I did this with the Weequays and ISB troopers and the Droids in Imperial Assault and I really liked the results.

Finished up my second squad of Rebek commandos yesterday.

As always just my standard tabletop quality stuff but I feel like these guys came out pretty nicely. They have a slightly warmer tone viewed through the eyeball rather than the camera. At some point I’m going to figure out a nice setup for mini photography but not today...

This is my last Rebel squad and the only remaining rebel I haven’t painted is my third ATRT. I haven’t acquired the specialists yet, although they look fun to paint. Box is getting pretty crowded...

For my Imperials I still have two scout trooper units, the laser cannon and a third Speeder bike unit. But I’m not in such a rush.

I do have to ask... why is each unit based differently? That’s unusual.

helps differentiate which squad belongs to which. I put stripes on my stormtroopers (blue, orange, green, red) to help them because even with different basing material I was getting them confused.

Question:

Do you have a saddle for that T-rex so you can mount the Jungle trooper?

Thanks man! Unfortunately memory fades and I was kind of winging it as I went along with these guys so I can’t be 100% sure but I will try.

They are all primed in Vallejo brown. Chewie was then washed with Army Painter Dark Tone twice and selectively dry brushed with Vallejo Leather Brown (pretty sure).

The others are mixes involving leather brown and chocolate brown (Vallejo), rhinox hide, mournfang brown and skrag brown (citadel). I also used some Khaki and arena sand (Vallejo) warmed up woth a slightly red something but I can remember. Some of them I washed with army painter mid brown as well.

The metals are from Vallejo game color metallics.

Man... sorry to be so useless.

When I started I had to decide if I was going to make an army all woth the same base or not. I decided not to. Since then I have been Experimentimg with different base techniques to see what I can do. I generally go for something that looks cool on the model.

I asked around before I started and the consensus was pretty split between “do what looks good on the figure - it doesn’t matter anyway” and “make a cohesive army.” But for me it’s been more fun doing different things. On the unfortunately rare occasions I’ve gotten to play it hasn’t bothered me at all that the forces are not uniformly based and it has helped a TON with keeping track of who’s who.
