Burn (and stun) stacks...

By Corbon, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

I just wondered if anyone else noticed yet in SoB - Burn stacks.

We ran up against a boss in one level that had Burn 2 (Madame Marlowe?).

Either it is a misprint, or Burn stacks. Which reignites (sorry, bad pun) the debate about other effects/special abilities stacking.

While it is still RAW that only some special abilities stack, it seems that many more could stack, they just haven't yet (eg basically anything that puts a counter on...)

There is also a level in which the boss can give 2 stuns per attack (a Manticore boss in a tavern IIRC). I don't recall if it was written as Stun 2 or 'gives 2 stun tokens'.

The rules for Burn on page 39 of the SoB pdf do not mention ranks (unlike, say, the rules for Aura , Command or Reach , which were all modified to have ranks in RtL). For whatever that's worth.

That's pretty much the point.

Even though they don't mention ranks, barring a misprint, Burn has ranks according to a Level Boss.

If Burn, why not others?

But it could still be a misprint.

For Stun stacking, the characters get multiple tokens, but the only affect that has is that the character is stunned for longer. You don't skip your turn or anything if you have two stun tokens, you just end up stunned for two turns.

(One game I played the other day, we were in the Tomb of Ice mission where the near-invincible boss shows up in the first room early on. One of our guys got stuck with him and a medusa in the same room... and managed to stay alive long enough for the other two heroes to clear out one of the side rooms. He had about a dozen stun tokens by the time he died.)

Every time a hero gets hit with a Burn attack, they get a Burn token (subject to normal application rules.) This means if they get hit by multiple monsters with Burn, they end up with multiple Burn tokens on them. This is how I, personally, have always understood the rules for Burn to work. Creatures with Burn 2 apply two tokens per attack (I think there was one boss like this in RtL as well.)

Same thing with Stun. You only remove one token per turn, but you can get as many as there are tokens in the game on top of you, in theory. You just stay Stunned longer.

If a hero can do multiple Burns from single attack, I don't see a problem why monster couldn't.
