Short of smoothly applying some Polyfilla/Blu-Tack in the recess underneath the bases, are there any more effective techniques or even purpose made products available that I should be aware of?

I would think a heavy washer or two glued on the bottom would work best... Then you have something to grab on to if you decide to go for magnetic carry trays down the line
