Drea Swarm - first take on the topic

By BoskiChe, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hello. I've picked up my first Y-Wing, so I've started toying with lists around Kavil and Drea. As I love flying no-named pilots, the first in line for testing is Drea. I have a few ships, so I have options, but unfortunately not all of them :P Specifically I don't own any Z95, Kilmogilas or Mining TIE's.

My assumption is to have at the very least 4 ships (including Drea), optimally 5-6. I need some utility as well as firepower and durability (I'm asking for a lot here :) ). I have put 2 similar lists. Please give opinion which is better and maybe suggest a little bit of tweaking.

List 1

Drea Renthal (40)
Debris Gambit (2)
Ion Cannon Turret (6)

Zealous Recruit (44)

Cartel Marauder (40)

Cartel Marauder (40)

Jakku Gunrunner (28)

Total: 200

Gambit for a bit of protection for Drea and Ion Turrent for some control. Other than this, quite some health in Khiraxes and some agility provided by a Fang. Looks nice and flexible.

List 2

Drea Renthal (40)
Dorsal Turret (4)

Zealous Recruit (44)

Zealous Recruit (44)

Cartel Marauder (40)

Jakku Gunrunner (28)

Total: 200

I call it a barebones approach. Dorsal Turrent is only for extending arc for Drea ability. Other than that Fangs worry me a bit as they are not the most durable ships overall (they are good blockers, but do I need 2 of them?).

Which one is better? What to change?I don't have 3-rd Khirax, which could be an attractive option.

Another question is how to fly it? I don't see any formation as a viable option, only loose flock of ships with Drea protected. Am I missing here something?

More ships = more reroll = more value from Drea. The two routes I've seen are 'lots of Z-95s and Gunrunners' or '3x Kimogila & L3-37'. Both are good, and the 3 Kimo's are super intimidating to set up opposite to.

What about Drea setup? Turret is a must have, but what about the rest of options for her?

Nothing. Her bullseye is big enough as it is

Drea with 3 VetTurGun ICT Y-Wings is also BRUTAL.

But ultimately, my fav option is a BUNCH of Quads

It seems that both approaches are vialable:

  • a lot cheap shipd
  • 3 more expensive ones (ex. Kilmogilas or Khiraxes)

Does anybody had experiences with fielding Fangs or Vipers with her?

This is the best Drea swarm I have run:

Drea Renthal (40)
Dorsal Turret (4)

Jakku Gunrunner (28)

Jakku Gunrunner (28)

Jakku Gunrunner (28)

L3-37 (22)

Palob Godalhi (38)
Moldy Crow (12)

Total: 200

While you only get the benefit of Drea's ability on 3 ships, this list is a target priority nightmare. Honestly I've ran it about 5-6 times and I still don't know who you should kill first. I'd lean L337 just because she's an easy target and that coordinate is really helpful for Palob or the Gunrunners. Drea makes the Gunrunners a bit more fearful offensively, and I usually Coordinate Palob so he can have TL + Focus attacks. Sadly I doubt I can run it anymore when the prices hit.

Torkil in the list (instead of Palob) is a beast, too, as the ability to focus-fire destroy a 0-initiative ship before it can return fire is brutal.

I just faced Drea_dorsal/Torkil_moldycrow/3x Jakku/1x BinayePirate and it was brutal.

Thanks for all answers. I went with the second one:

List 2

Drea Renthal (40)
Dorsal Turret (4)

Zealous Recruit (44)

Zealous Recruit (44)

Cartel Marauder (40)

Jakku Gunrunner (28)

Total: 200

I was pleasantly surprised. My dice love me when I use cheap generics (and totally hate when I field something more sophisticated). To my amusement I've forgotten to use Drea's ability.... and I've still won. Good blocks combined with a numbers advantage proved brutal. Basically my opponent went for Drea leaving the rest of the list untouched and payed for his choice. He had Redline, Whisper and Vader :) Redline was smoked by 2 Fangs and finished by Khirax, Veder went down to Gunnrunner sheningans (few rocks to the face:P) and Whisper did't have much chance either :)

I loved flying this list. Naked Fangs are he most fun ships I have ever flown.

Naked Fangs are nasty. I've run 3 naked Fangs with 2 Quads. Throw some Conners on the Quads and you have a ton of crowd control. Nothing wants to get hit with a Conner Net when 3 Fangs are bearing down on them. So, people will make erratic moves.

Quads get a lot of love in 2.0, but for 44 points a naked Fang is **** good. In the above, people go for the Quads first because they're easier to kill and just annoying as all get out. That leaves the Fangs tearing things up for several rounds longer than they usually would.
