Can Kanan use his pilot ability on himself? Just wanted to clarify since my interpretation of "in arc" and range 0 are separate.

Correct. Kanan-pilot does not work on himself. A ship is not in it's own arc.
Kanan-crew works on his own, ship, however.
Kanan Pilot got severely nerfed in relation to first edition... for what he cost, there is not a lot of ship that will remain to protect...
I'm hoping for a clarification/errata for Kanan, that allows him to use his ability for himself. That would open up a lot of Fat Kanan options for the game... maybe even some force-heavy builds with Ezra/Maul/Hate:
