Presenting "The Maw" (ver 0.2.0) Competitive Hyper-extend format that bridges between 2nd edition and extended.

By Marinealver, in X-Wing

So here is a competitive format I cam up with called the Maw once again using the Custom Format option on FFG's cumbersome but now somewhat utilizable app. The idea is that all models are playable but those from extended have a restricted pilot roster to keep things balanced . All upgrades from hyperspace (and most title upgrades from extended) are legal. I gave it the version # of 0.2.0 because the clone war factions are not out yet, so I haven't included the ARC-170 as that is going to be a republic ship. So you can call this a beta. I have added in a few pilots just to keep things level from my initial proposal in the thread links below.

The Hyperlink below is for the format.

Notes: The Custom Format option does a very poor job on specifying which upgrades are what especially on unique upgrades that span across multiple factions (i.e. Han Solo) so I just enabled all upgrades with that name if it is legal for one faction then it is legal for all factions.

Well there you go. Tell me why no one will play this in a reply below or if you think this might be a good format to try out. Or if you have your own format idea. I would love to see Gold Squadron, Kryat Dragon or Scum & Villainy make up their own Custom Format to be used at their many well orginized tournaments that are not ran by OP.

For those interested at the pilot selection here are the thread below.

It's an interesting idea, but I'm struggling to see what advantage this format has. The main complaint against Hyperspace is that people can't play the ships they want. From this list, there are still many ships I may want to play but can't (for instance, if I want to fly my Z-95s, but am strictly a Rebel player; or if I only want to fly a G1-A because Zuckuss is my favorite bounty hunter). And yet, if we only exclude ships no one wants anyway, we're essentially back at Extended.

Why would you make the very few cross-faction ships (Z-95, Y-wing, HWK, etc...) only available for one faction? I can see no advantage to doing that.

No named Ghost pilots and you're calling this a beta?

I'm not sure what the advantage of this format is. The idea of Hyperspace as I understand it is to get around new players having to trawl eBay for 1.0 components in order to compete by restricting the card pool to components found in non-Conversion rereleases. Despite all the 'diversity through truncation' talk, it's ultimately just a solution to the entry barrier.

This format allows most of the ships, but bans most of the pilots. I don't see the benefit. You've still got the Extended entry barrier. I don't mean to sound harsh, but this seems like a worst-of-both-worlds solution.

I didn't include Zuckuss because I didn't have any of that feed back on Zuckuss, but if necessary the next version the pilots can be switched, or maybe the crew cards could be added if the only thing that is important is the persona.

Mainly to keep the factions different but that can also be changed too. However none of the models (except for the ARC-170) is banned in this format, but the majority of the pilots and upgrades are from 2nd edition so the ships that have a 2nd edition release take a more prominent role in the format, but none of the extend ships are left out in the cold. However with the custom format it could be changed so that the ships that spans the factions could have a larger presence on one faction (by setting up a non-unique one) and giving the other faction a single unique pilot just to set up that said ships id predominantly with this faction.

Well again, as had already been previously discussed on numerous threads about Hyperspace format (a few of them now locked) still has new players search ebay for ships (especially if they want to play the new factions). And for those who like the iconic ships from the OT such as TIE Interceptors, well they are stuck with extended. So in this case the entry barrier has been compounded as players have to first pick a format then pick a faction or they could just stick to Clone Wars and don't worry about formats.

Either way, the purpose for this thread is to have a community format for competitive play. Right now thanks to the hyperspace format a format that isn't friendly to either the new players or the ones returning from 1st edition the community is divided on which format to play. So if both formats are fundamentally flawed then the community should get together and make their own competitive format . Heck I would love to see maybe Scum and Villainy podcast make their own Scum Aces League format instead of just flying Extended and it doesn't sound like they are too thrilled about hyperspace either. This format just makes an emphasis on 2nd edition releases, includes all the models that hyperspace left out, but not every component from the conversion kits in hopes to make those kits not a meta essential product. I know the argument of including only the bad pilots is the same as banning the ship. But I still defer that argument in favor of if a player wants to bring a bad ship (or the bad pilot for that ship) to a tournament they should have that option.

I'll even go further and note that I don't see a point to this?

The community is already heavily divided on their being two official formats for official events. Suggesting a third non-official format, even one that were better than the official alternatives, is pointless because it won't get any uptake at real events, given that it is is unofficial.

A very wise mentor once gave me some brilliant advice before I started a new job: "Imagine if the King could move 2 Spaces in chess. It would be really interesting. Imagining how the game would change might even be a lot of fun. Entire treatises could be written about how the game of chess would morph with such a king. ... But the King doesn't move two spaces." The moral of the story, of course, is not to waste too much intellectual time and energy on a task that, as satisfying and stimulating as it may be, will never have any application.

Wizard's chess and 4d chess?

But to add more substance, you seem to have put a lot of work into it. I say go for it, after all isn't h.o.t.a.c fanmade?

Come to think of it, the last patch is what gave the queen her OP powers.
