Dewback Attack!

Thoughts on Dewbacks.

I know I want one or two in my army!

Hopefully they're already in the works so this is just for fun but...

1 unit counts as corps witj certain commanders (capt. terro) same slot as eweb and speeder bikes. 2 to a unit

Red and black dice pool

I'd like to see both a hero and a squad of these. The squad would be corps ideally, or perhaps even heavy.

While I like anachronistic units in games, I have no idea of their battlefield use. They're 'plodding' animals native to Tatooine with a regular sandtrooper riding them as far as I can tell. A DLT on a large slow moving target doesn't sound great. Especially on Hoth.

They make sense for patrols but the riders would likely dismount before battle.

Then again, Banthas are pretty impractical with a lone rifleman and they turn up in games so If there's enough demand I'm sure they'll find a way.

I expect theyโ€™d be a DLT with a powerful melee attack and a lot of health.

Dewbacks and Tauntauns.

Dewbacks are singles like the AT-RT; Tautauns are in pairs like speeder bikes.

This is exactly what I want - not too concerned with abilities and whatnot but that layout makes total sense. Maybe be the time to introduce some sort of creature rule (courage value for vehicles? something to simulate the wild creature - maybe they can panic but don't lose actions to suppression?).

Get these beautiful models on the table so we can recreate the Battle of Pelennor Fields but in Star Wars. Do it FFG!

I wonder if eventually weโ€™ll get neutral creatures, like a roaming rancor.

I want a two pack but I would like it so you can switch the heads/tails on the dewback bodies so you can make several versions. Basically I'd like to see one dewback head with its head down and mouth opened and the other with mouth closed. And two bodies with legs in different positions... Etc.

And I would like to see similar customisability on any of their infantry models, but FFG has instead opted to only include only exactly as much plastic as you need for the unit in each box. Which has merit of course, but means third party printers provide the alternate heads and such.

I'd LOVE for a more customizable kit, but realistically it's very unlikely. Just trying to give you realistic expectations so you aren't as disappointed as I was when I first found out FFG went with single pose models prior to the initial release. :)

I want and would in most cases buy multiple:

  • Dewbacks ridden by stormtroopers
  • Banthas ridden by Sand People (IF they could be part of an all Sand Person 800 point force)
  • Tauntauns ridden by Hoth rebels
  • Rancors
  • Wampas
  • Mynocks
  • Cracian Thumpers ridden by fleet troopers

I will not concern myself with their stats beyond force organization minimum and maximums, nor buy any prequel or sequel trilogy non-sentient creatures. The Corellian Hounds from SOLON: A Star Track Story would get my money though, I liked those evil dinosaur space pugs. I will not buy hoojib minis but I'd buy a hoojib t-shirt.

And I don't care what they are called in canon, The Battle For Endor had Jabba's guards riding on dinosaurs, and I'd buy those too!

Add to that Kowakian Lizard Monkey cavalry ...

Rancors, Dewbacks, Banthas, Nexu, Wampas, and Loth Cats are all fun in Imperial Assault... ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

Iโ€™d buy banthas riding on sand people.

Back in my day... being cold blooded they had two movement characteristics... one fast one for daytime when they were warmed up, and a slow one for night when they were cold.

I thought that as well but was quoting the description on the Star Wars website. That's what I get for not referencing correctly.

That said, they can apparently put on a burst of speed when stressed which could make them slightly less dreadful in a combat situation.

"Official" descriptions are always changing I can't keep up. But I want to paint Star Wars dinosaurs. RARRR!

Dinosaurs would probably be more apt than lizards: I think scientists are pretty sure now that dinosaurs weren't cold blooded or if they were, because of their size, they effectively had a consistent internal temperature so their speed wouldn't be dependent on the weather. Like you say, official descriptions are tricky. Even in the desert of the real.

More to the point, Star Wars Dinosaurs sound like an excellent idea. Being cold blooded on Hoth... The Force did it.

Dewbacks have a leg positioning that is inconsistent with terran cold blooded reptiles and amphibians, and much more in line with the lineages of extinct reptiles that gave rise to mammals and dinosaurs. The legs are tucked under the body (like a dog or a stegosaurus), not sprawling out on the sides (like a lizard or newt). This is an important step in being able to regulate your own body temperature: you'd gain or lose a lot of heat by putting a lot of surface (ie, your belly) area directly on the ground like frogs, turtles, etc. do. Who knows. It's almost like dewbacks are pretend or something....

I like how in the SW movies all mounts and beasts of burden are native to whatever planet we see them on. Jump out of the spaceship, tame some wildlife or rent an unfamiliar beast, and then start on the mission. Heaven forbid they move useful beasts around like terran horses on sailing ships! Kinda like how all sentient aliens have a predilection to whatever profession we first see them in. Usually bounty hunters. Private security and law enforcement is by far the largest industry in Star Wars, apparently.

Theropod dinosaurs were almost definitely warm blooded and most lacked the kind of body mass of today's biggest reptiles, they apparently made up for this with feathers for insulation. Today there are twice as many bird species as mammal species. Dinosaurs still rule the earth, B*****S!

WELL DONE!

MUCH FORCE IN THIS ONE!

Now I need a Monkey Lizard for my commanders shoulder....
