Pattern Analyzer gives an action on a rock?

By JBFancourt, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Can you do a 4K red onto a rock then perform an action u sing pattern analyzer (barrel roll off and template did not overlap for the BR)?

I think yes because all hitting a rock does is make you skip your action step, but PA allows you to perform an action outside the action step.

Similar to defenders still getting an evade if they hit a rock (but still fully execute a 3+ speed)...

Thoughts?

Yup works fine. If you're Nien and you can clear your stress, you do still skip your perform action step though.

yup, this works.

In fairness, you DID still hit a rock, and as such, do still need to roll for damage as well... but otherwise, your explanation is spot on.

(All of this, of course, is assuming that Collision Detector is not part of the equation.)

Yeah, lost a shield... then he cleared his stress and blew up one of my ships (Nien). Lol. We were pretty sure this was right, I just wanted to post for reassurance.

Why would Nien skip his perform action step? It says to take an action before the check stress phase, not to shift the perform action phase earlier. So after the white action is performed via PA, stress is checked and thrown away (Nien's ability), why would Nien not get to perform an action during the perform action phase since he is not stressed going into it? I didn't see anything in official rulings on it.

Oh wait, never mind. Because of the rock. :) I was thinking more generally about NN abuse.
