Health of the Game?

By AllWingsStandyingBy, in Runewars Miniatures Game

With the RPG released, they could tie in so much back/side stories with battles that form the OP battles as well. Borrow the above, but weave into the side of the RPG. And lets face it, alot of table top RPG players use mini and if you are playing the Terroth RPG, you are probably buying Descent and RWMG minis. This is what got me to make my first purchase, although for D&D.

+1 on the wow. @Viktus106 should be writing and developing this line for FFG. I never thought of it like this, I simply thought of it as a game. With this narrative, it would create a whole new dynamic that could have been woven through Descent and the RPG as well. This is what happens when you have a lot of silo’s or individual product lines all mashed together in a (now) larger company.

If anyone from FFG is out there, please take note of this suggestion...

I've always felt like the game has been telling a story with its launch pattern (even the delayed uthuk invasion and the long wait for faolan to bring the aid of the darnati). Someone alluded to it a long time ago, might have been @Viktus106 then too.

If nothing else it would be a good way to make a narrative based learn to play for getting new players interested. Introduce units and factions as they released, with a story driven focus on the objectives and matchups.

Might have been me as I cannot switch off story time. :)

If there was a living narrative campaign, it would bring a new aspect to the game and could even sway people into bringing specific factions to a tournament just because they want them to play a bigger part in the narrative.

Could even go as far as to have a campaign map online that is influenced by the total amount of Victory Points accrued by a faction at a OP event. This would then move their armies across the map and act as a visual guide to the ebb and flow of a campaign. Perhaps you could even go as far as having the highest ranking player of each faction at the event determine which battlefront all the points earned by the faction that event went? A Waiqar player could decide that settling their feud with Daqan is more important than dealing with the Uthuk and decides to allocate their VP to the battlefront that is connected with Daqan, pushing further into the Baronies.

At the end of the year, the final positions would then decide on the next big part of the story. You could release a Campaign Box with specific missions relating to the end of year results, new terrain and alternative unit cards. Did Waiqar make it all the way to the Daqan stronghold, if so then there could be a special Deployment and Objective set in there allowing you to play out the last ditch defense of the Daqan (featuring two 3D printed Stronghold card pieces) or perhaps the Latari attacked deep into Waiqar territory and disrupted Maro's plans to summon a Blighted Dragon which would be played out by another special set of Deployment and Objective cards (maybe having Maro fixed to the board on a special terrain piece, like a giant alter and he summons the dragon at the end of turn 6 if unengaged?).

Just feel like they missed a trick here. . This is their own IP, they are not tied into any specific story and they have a chance to do something that 40k has tried to do for years.

I'd happy help FFG do it. :)

In my small group, we have purchased the Genesys roleplaying RPG and the Terrinoth lore book. The single reason was Runewars the miniature game. The plan is to incorporate our games in Runewars into the RPG. Looking at the battle from afar, hearing rumors of fallen castles, defeating and escaping vanguards of armies, smuggling supplies (Davos style?) to places and so on. One of the better things about the RPG and Runewars alike is that they are quite simple games to teach so the potential is quite large for cross-interest of the two games. The players' number and community of Runewars are small but the fact that they got a passionate community that sells the game too other players, and that other Terinoth games get increased interest makes me believe that they will continue to support this game.

Friend of mine has both of those but we have yet to sit down and have him DM a game but I would like to run a RPG set in Terrinoth.

Think a good start would be a group hired to escort some supplies between two Daqan cities but arrive to find the entire village slaughtered. The rapid buzz of flies and the pungent smell of rotting Human and Dwarven flesh mixed with stagnated blood pollutes the air here and leaves a foul stench offensive to all who breath. In contrast to the carnage that lays before you, the few outlying buildings within the small village such as the smithy, cobbler and tavern have clearly been ransacked but otherwise appear to be intact.

Meanwhile, the central town house, where the local population would gather for meetings of court and also to dine, seems to have been barricaded in a desperate last stand. Bodies piled against the makeshift ramparts suggest some were cut down were they stood whilst others fought tooth and nail to gain entry . . . .

Now this sets the scene for anything, you could have the bodies begin to revive, suggesting Waiqar foul play or you could have a broken weapon still in-bedded within a city guard, a weapon made of reinforced bone or chitinous claw . . alternatively, perhaps you find more than one coat of arms among the dead . one of Cathridge. . one of Seragatt . . .

Either way, you are going to be using those Rune Wars minis!

Maybe later in the campaign, you manage to win the support of an entire army and have to BREAK THEIR DEFENSES!

Well... and there it goes

Whew, just in time too... I was gonna pick up that collection on Wednesday. Disaster averted, I guess.

Name should be AllWAYSstandingby amiright?

You guys are taking the death of your game so much better than the armada community is taking the likely eventual death of theirs. people are on edge if someone even slightly nay says.

Person 1 "I'd like to see an app and a 2.0"

Person 2"it's more likely we'll see an axe"

Person 3"DON'T SAY THINGS LIKE THAT, THERE ARE NO PROBLEMS, EVERYTHING WAS FINE AT THE LAST EVENT, PUNCH AND PIE WAS SERVED!!!1!"

Person 2"/incoherent dark humor. /old yeller joke"

/Sh*tstorm ensues

I was curious, after quite possibly being person 2 in said event, how you guys were taking everything and it's way better than i expected. Sorry FFG did what they do, you guys didn't deserve that

Wait, so should we be recruiting Armada players? Is that what I'm reading?

"Sure, both of our games are probably dead, but our community is way more optimistic about our prospects as a community driven zombie game, so come on over..."

Ironically your guys game was getting more releases in the past year than ours has been and they still killed it. I honestly have no idea what FFG's plan for Armada is but it feels like letting it die from starvation is the modus operandi they've decided on.

Do you want to share communities? We'll just be called Runemada and each release from FFG will include half new stuff for Armada and half new stuff for Runewars.

There's always Legion. Or Kings of War/Vanguard

But I like Rune Wars because movement matters so precisely, and flanking opponents is devastating and thrilling. Also, one roll per attack means every attack has impact, rather than many attacks whiffing or killing a single figure as the norm.

Suppression is a mildly interesting mechanic that Legion brings to skirmish, but it just so blatantly highlights all the worst elements of skirmish games, too, and they're all the things I love Rune Wars for NOT being.

In the "so Armada is dead right?" category. At the FFGC regional this weekend we had 32 players. That's 4 rounds with cut to top 2. That's up from 24 last year. Our local tournament sizes have also seen an interesting uptick in numbers with a number of new players. It's pretty cool.

<snark> O right, worlds numbers for Runewars was like double YtY and well ... look what they did there. </snark>

It's so weird, armada seems to have solid tournament numbers (I haven't been to a regional that had less than 24 players and I've been to 6 over this and last season) and their worlds tickets sold out within a min of being posted last year and within 5 mins this year for adepticon. I just don't get FFG's perspective on the subject.

I have NO idea how Runewars was doing on the tournament scene.

Not as well as Armada.

Rank and file games have traditionally not done as well as tactical miniature games, I think in general there is a smaller audience for games like that but I do believe part of the reason is that in traditional rank and file games you have to collect and paint a mega-crap ton of indistinct miniatures which is a big turn off and while that is less the case with Runewars when you have painted your 30th skeleton you pretty much just want to shoot yourself in the face. I literally got a quarter of the way through painting my army and just lost the will to play, I just don't want to paint that many mini's and I don't want to play unpainted armies. I think that is a common consensus among players.

Its also really hard for paint and assemble games to break into the market in general because no matter how good they are they have an extremely narrow selections compared to established games. I mean with Warmahorde you have 14 factions (soon to be 15) to pick from. 40k I don't even know, but its a lot. Today you have choices from 4 factions in Runewars and while still better than most of FFG's games, its not much.

Runewars has to survive its adolescents, gets some more factions on the board, establish its lore and stick it out. Privateer Press went through the same thing with Warmahorde, it took them a long time to really get their footing, but today next to 40k its one of the most played miniature games on the market.

You just have to hope that FFG has some long term vision, though personally I think the game would be doing a lot better if it wasn't rank and file and had a smaller model count on the table. One unfortunate aspect of Runewars is that it's really not fun to play with smaller than standard sized armies. It really doesn't scale well, in fact, most of FFG's games don't scale well.

I haven't played a game in months.

We had/have some players down in San Antonio but now I'm up around Denver and it's just crickets.

Denver you say? Hit me up for a game, I'd love to play.

In Colorado, the game simply never took off. There was a small group down in Colorado Springs/Pueblo but they seem to have petered out. As far as I know, there was never a scene for it in Denver or in Boulder/Broomfield/Longmont that has a big gaming community. There were handfuls of guys here and there who tried it out, but no one that was interested in doing tournaments. Right now, Gaslands has a bigger Colorado FB group than Runewars ever did.

But I love the game and am happy to roll it out any time. PM me if you want to get a game in.
