Wild Stallion

By Flrbb, in Strategy and deck-building

(maybe stupid) question about Wild Stallion here:

The ally, to which WS gets attached gets a +1 bonus, but also you get -1, because you do not have WS as an ally itself. Besides defending, where more shield and hitpoints on a single character are helpful, what are benefits of the WS? Are there any (game breaking) synergies I do not see?

Thanks in advance.

For starters it lets you avoid losing two characters to a "deal 1 damage to all [questing/ready/exhausted/whatever] allies/characters" treacheries, which is quite good in my book. But let's be honest for now the Wild Stallion BFF is the Guardian of Esgaroth, since together they make a 3/3/3/3 character.

Great for Narya decks that work with allies. With the Stallion and Narya, Gildor can block almost anything and survive, especially if Lords of the Eldar are at hand

Wild Stallion is great for:

  • Deal 1 damage to each ally Treacheries
  • Boosting defensive allies
  • Allies that you ready (getting double duty out of two stats) or who don't exhaust to do their thing
  • Guardian of Esgaroth
  • Boosting allies who do nonstandard things with one of their stats (eg Rosie Cotton)

I like it on Orthanc guard, which can quest, ready, defend, and possibly ready again to defend a second time. (Needs a little bit more to be really good, but even with just WS, he's a 3/3 defender who also quests for 2.)

I also love him on the rider of Rohan, who now quests without exhausting for 3 and then attacks for 3 as well.

Vigilant Dunadan is another excellent use, as is also possibly Watcher of the Bruinen.

A Vigilant DĂșnadan with Wild Stallion, Arwen and Keep Watch can defend effectively for 5 without exhausting and then strike back for 4. Wicked.

One question on the stalling card.

I understand that once it is attached to an ally it becomes an attachemt: it cannot detach from the ally and if the ally is discarded it is discarded too. Is it correct?

Or you can decide if attach it and to which ally attach it every planning phase with the possibility to pass it to different character every round? The card says planning action: attach to an ally. It does not say it is not reversible.

Once attached it's just a mount attachment like any other mount attachment. But like all attachments, if you have SpBard in play it will return to the owner's hand if the character is discarded.

Reference ruling:

I already found a cosy place for my wild stallion in a Caldara deck: both Glorfindel ally and Jubayr can really enjoy it, and it became even more powerful since I can use narya on them.

I think there's something to be said for flexibility too. It's almost certainly better than just an attachment if what you want is a chump blocker, but it can also offer a nice stat boost to another ally.

You get a pretty good attachment for the cost too. Compare to Raiment of War, which gives similar stats but at the cost of both restricted slots, or Mirkwood Longknife which offers worse stats and can be used by far fewer characters.

The downside of the stallion is that it can only go on allies. There's a lot of heroes that would benefit from it, especially if Elfhelm were around.
