A few questions from a new player

By DenverMisanthrope, in X-Wing Rules Questions

My partner and I started playing Star Trek: Attack Wing a few months ago, and it's been fun — but he's the Star Trek fan whereas I have much warmer, fuzzier feelings towards the Star Wars IP. So I decided to start buying what I needed for us to play X-Wing. This is fairly uncharted territory for me, since I'm used to games (even large ones like Gloomhaven) where you buy one box and it's got everything you need. For X-Wing, when placing my initial order, I was using what I now believe was a fairly dated guide (i.e. prior to the release of the second edition). At first I'd ordered the core set (which I now know was the first edition) and the Force Awakens core set, along with some expansion packs that were also recommended in the guide.

Then I learned about the second edition , and that's sort of thrown things into chaos. I was able to cancel the 1st edition core set from the order, which I then replaced with two second edition core sets. The Force Awakens core set had already shipped, but I can return it, of course. But then there are the expansion packs I've ordered that I'm now unsure whether to keep or not. So, my questions are...

  1. Is the Force Awakens core set compatible with the second edition, or would it require a conversion kit?
    • If it does require a conversion kit, which one(s) specifically?
    • Would it make more sense to just return the Force Awakens core kit and keep just the two second edition core kits that are en route?
  2. NONE of the expansion packs I ordered make any mention of "second edition" — does that mean they'd all require conversion kits?
  3. Do the contents of the conversion kits replace items that were included in the expansion packs (i.e. I would throw some stuff away) or are they "in addition to"?
    • I watched a video that showed ship stands included with the conversion kits — why? Wouldn't the stands that originally came with the ships still work?
    • If I have ships from expansion packs that were released prior to the second edition, are the cards going to be stylistically or physically different from the second edition cards or cards included in the conversion kits?

It's entirely possible I'm overthinking all this. But I'm OCD enough that the idea of having a mixed setup for X-Wing gives me anxiety. If the game's now on its second edition, I want to make sure everything I'm playing with reflects that. I'm fine shelling out the money to buy conversion kits if necessary , but I don't want to just throw money in the garbage for no reason. I also really don't want mismatched cards/pieces. Like I said... OCD.

If it's helpful, I'll list everything I've ordered so far that's on its way. Would love to get any feedback/advice — either on packs I shouldn't keep (either because they can't be made to conform to second edition... or because they're crap) or on other ships I should add to the list... as well as any conversion kits I should buy to get everything up to date.

Apologies for the lengthy post. I appreciate any help/guidance anyone can offer. Thanks!

First off, welcome to X-wing!

1. The Force Awakens core set was released in 1.0 when the new Disney-backed movies began. You would need 1 Resistance Comversion Kit and 1 First Order Conversion Kit to use the 3 ships; I recommend returning it.

2. Looking at your list of expansions, they are all 1.0 and would require conversion kits. (1 Rebel & 1 Imperial kit)

3. The kits replace -everything- except the ship models themselves is the quick answer. The kits also come with medium bases that some 1.0 ships were changed to use.

Everything except the models, plastic bases, and stands .

Don't chuck those.

I always forget that part as I stopped keeping them after a while.

Thanks, both of you. And thanks also for being more concise than I'm apparently capable of. LOL

Bomb tokens and obstacles are also valid from 1.0

And D I C E !

If money is not a problem, conversion kit are not that pricey for these ship, you only need one for Rebel and one for Empire. But I would return the Force Awaken Core set as other said...

That is one of the problem of the second edition, it is not always well documented on store that still sell old model :( Not like it is to their advantage to say: Ya know, these are nearly obsolete

One other Attack Wing to X-Wing note: The banks are different. You may have learned this already from just having the stuff if you've opened them, but ST:AW banks are longer, maybe even half a base length different..

Thanks again for the help, all. I ended up finding a local game shop that had a good selection, so I added some Scum & Villainy ships and the conversion kit (which I wasn't planning to do initially). I've already spent hours just unboxing and trying to get everything organized — looking forward to actually playing at some point. 😶

I had a moment of frustration whereupon I couldn't find a new version of a pilot in the conversion kit (I'd opened the Imperial Aces box first and couldn't find a "Carnor Jax" pilot card), but eventually I realized it wasn't a 1:1 refresh of existing content and stopped worrying about matching up old and new exactly.
