Midnight’s interaction with Reinforce?

By JBFancourt, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hello, All:

Please give me the breakdown on the rules between FO Midnight and reinforce.

Played on vassal today... neither of us knew for sure but we went with it not triggering when Midnight had my Deci locked.

Is it a dice modification?

Is it significant that reinforce happens during neutralize step not mod step?

Thanks in advance! @Maui. you have final say... ;)

Short answer: Midnight still shuts down the function of Reinforce , I think.

Reinforce works a little differently now, than it used to in First Edition. Back then, you would add an evade result to your dice pool while modifying dice - clearly, a modification, that Midnight (then known as Omega Leader) would prohibit. Now, Reinforce adds during Neutralize results, and only if there are 2+ damage results left in the pool.

That doesn't get around the one key feature of how Reinforce works: it still adds 1 evade result to the dice pool, even if it's not in the usual step. And since adding a die result is still a modification, Midnight puts a stop to that right away.

For more info, see the Rules Reference Guide , page 15.

Can you crack shot it? @emeraldbeacon

Oh nevermind it says before neutralize step on Crack Shot card. Derp.

That depends on the question... Are we talking about using Crack Shot on an attack versus Midnight, or another ship using Crack Shot against a Reinforce?

  • Used against Midnight , Crack Shot works just fine. It CANCELS dice results, which does NOT count as a modification. (Adding dice results, changing or rerolling dice, or spending dice is currently the full list of what constitutes a modification).
  • Used against Reinforce , Crack Shot technically works... just not as well as you may hope. Thanks to its timing, it triggers right before Reinforce would kick in... which means, sometimes you're not gaining any benefit. Making a missed attack into a 1-damage hit is great - Reinforce doesn't work against singleton damage. And making a nasty attack worse - say, 2 or 3 damage turning into 3 or 4 - means that more squeaks through. But you should never spend Crack Shot to turn 1 damage into 2, against a Reinforced target, because the extra evade from Reinforce will just undo your work.

👍

Midnight: While you defend or perform an attack, if you have a lock on the enemy ship, that ship's dice cannot be modified.

Reinforce: During the Neutralize Results step, if the attack would hit and there is more than one hit/crit result remaining, one evade result is added to cancel one result.

DICE MODIFICATION
Players can modify dice by spending various tokens and by resolving abilities. Dice can be modified in the following ways:
• Add: To add a die result, place an unused die displaying the result next to the rolled dice. A die added in this way is treated as a normal die for all purposes and can be modified and canceled.
• Change: To change a die result, rotate the die so that its faceup side displays the new result.
• Reroll: To reroll a die result, pick up the die and roll it again.
• Spend: To spend a result, remove the die from the dice pool.

Since Reinforce adds a result and adding results is considered dice modification, Midnight does stop Reinforce from working.

Sorry for Necroing but I want to ask about Crack shot on Midnight.

It sounds like she can use it on a locked defender she's attacking. Is that correct?

Correct.

Canceling dice is not a dice modification.

Crack Shot cancels a result, thus isn't modifying their dice.

Precisely correct! As a reminder/refresher for everyone:

  • These ARE modifications!
    • Rerolling 1 or more dice results (Spending a lock, Predator)
    • Adding 1 or more dice results (Finn Pilot, Norra Wexley, Reinforce)
    • Changing dice results (spending focus or force)
    • Spending dice results (Thane Kyrel, Ion Cannon)
    • Han Solo Pilot ability (because he's... weird)
  • These are NOT modifications!
    • Rolling additional dice (Jan Ors pilot, Gideon Hask in Xi Shuttle)
    • Cancelling dice (Crack Shot, Munitions Failsafe)
