Been busy and also I compacted November/dec releases into an Xmas present for extra Xmas day excitement.
Just finished Palpatine and his Royal Guard.. love the guard models but hate their fitting.
Chewy and his gang soon to follow.

Very nice! So you went with gloss on their helmets? I can’t decide if I want to or not...
Yes...imo it looks a lot better like that.
These look really fantastic. I’ve been looking forward to the guards because of the relatively simple paint scheme and only four models in the squad, lol.
The hard part about guys that are “just red” is making them look interesting and you’ve certainly succeeded. Can you talk about your color choices?
Also, when you say you don’t like the “fit” I assume that means the way the models go together?

Thanks. Regards the fit, the 2 main pcs that make the model dont fit very well (its near the shoulders, just below, on the front)...I think the angle of the picture and the painting disguises it quite well in the above shots though.
Regards paint. Primed in white or red, no big deal.
Base coat in Mephiston Red
Wash with Carroburg Crimson
Then using watered down Wild Rider Red....add layer after layer. Each layer brings out a brighter shade due to the thickness building up(looks terrible on first layering but you soon start to see where its going). most layers go on the helmet/facial areas to make them the brightest area and focal point(dont think that shows well under the bright light these are in tbh).
Gloss on the helmet.
Its the same method used by sorastro for his Royal Guard figures for Imperial Assault - Just search Sorastro Royal Guard (or imperial assault)
Edit, for the sleeves/legs, I didnt want to go TOO purple...so just left it at the base coat, then added a couple of purple washes(forget the GW name..might have been druchia violet or however you spell it).

That’s really helpful. So the inner garment is the same base coat as the overcoat but with a different wash and you highlighted up the helmet and outer cloak with a lighter red. I will check the video becaus his videos are all terrific.

Yep, all painted Mephiston red as a base. Sleeves/Legs are just washed with the purple a few times.
the robes/helment/gloves/boots wash with Crimson and then increasing layers of wild Rider red ...watered down so it builds up brightness with each layer (try it on something...works brilliantly imo).
They look great! Always impressed by your work.
I went with a brush on satin for the helmets and boots myself. I did one squad RotJ specific and a second squad with 2 done as Shadow Elite Royal Guards (comics) and 2 done as Senate Royal Guards (episodes 1-3). I really like how the Senate ones came out and will post pics soon.

I generally do very little highlighting. I tend to base coat and wash, them fix one or two things. I know this doesn’t make my miniatures award winnning but it tends to be good enough for me.
Since there are so few models I may highlight these guards more. Alternately, I might simply paint the robe with a brighter crimson and wash in red while the undergarments get flat red and purple wash. We will see what mood strikes me at the time. If I do the whole basecoat in one color I might save myself time and effort by using my airbrush and then I can use the time for highlighting... Fun to plan while I’m back in the office after vacation.
