My Stormtroopers- first thing I’ve ever painted

By darrenwhitehouse, in Painting

Just getting into miniature gaming having discovered tabletop gaming over the last 18 months. Tried to follow Sorastro’s great guide but errors led because they weren’t white enough after priming so they look like ‘dirty’ stormtrooperS but hey ho. Tried out some different techniques (dry brushing and shading). Lots to learn but I’m quite pleased with them as a noob. Happy Gaming in 2019 everyone

The red on the missile launchers is a nice touch. What color did you paint the commander's shoulderpads? Gonna paint the bases at some point? I think if you put a couple coats of green, tan, grey or brown on them these guys will look great.

Thanks for looking! I did one commander red and one commander blue on the shoulder pads. Will do the bases but haven't got any basing materials yet (was thinking of buying some play sand from the DIY centre and then washing it with a dark tone - would that work?!). I want to get the rest of the core set painted so I could play it (still haven't read the rules yet! :-) )

I've now painted the rebels and definitely feel like I'm improving a lot with a less shaky hand. Tried to highlight a few of these but not really sure what I'm doing with highlighting - should I just be aiming to highlight a few raised edges here and there in the main basecoat colour and presumably AFTER the wash?

For a first time these look excellent!

Nice work.

ST might seem pretty basic..but they are actually a difficult figure to paint compared to some that might appear more complex.

If you wash the the whole area, you can highlight darkened areas back up to the original colors. Or you can lighten it a bit and hit the raised areas. I would recommend a “less us more” approach as you improve your general painting skills. Just highlight one or two areas that you really want to catch the eye. Later, as you get more proficient with your brush, paint consistency and color mixing you can start to go nuts on highlights.

@darrenwhitehouse have you painted anymore? Your troopers look great, have based them yet?

Yeah, white is by far the hardest colour to paint and have it look good.
