Commissar!

With guardsmen being in DH... do you think there should be a Commissar career somewhere?

For my part, it is a really shiny career potential... since they serve in the Shock Troops before as they say in the Imperial Guard codex, i think it would make an awesome Ascension career alternative for Guardsmen more leadership oriented.

Just thinking about Ibram Gaunt and his Tanit first and only make me wish there was a commissar career.

I know it is more army related and less insquisition, but i think a commissar could make a great Inquisition cadre addition considering they added shock tropper. A man whose there to keep the group morale and maybe add protection against fear and insanity.

If you wanted you could modify the Interrogator of the Inquisitor to use as a Commisar.

IMO the reason they have not included a Commissar career in DH is because they are relatively USELESS to the Inquisition. The Imperial Navy and Imperial Guard are another matter entirely, but a career path that relies on making their presence known in a vulgarly obvious manner is less than helpful to a group that largely operates on subtlety, intrigue and misdirection. The guy in a black stormcoat, peaked cap with a skull icon, fancy black uniform with braiding and a red sash can only be ONE thing, and EVERYONE knows it.

For those of you running Imperial Guard games using the DH rules might I suggest making a few modifications to the Cleric career and then calling your new creation "Commissar"? Just remove some of the more faith driven and Forbidden Lore options and add a few replacements from the Guardsman career as compensation. Also remember to include the "Feared and Loathed" trait that was introduced in IH in the Chaliced Commissariate alternate career package. Obviously, any "real" Commissar should hate Hax's "fraudulent pet Commissars" with the usual passion these people bring to their job.

Unfortunately with the passing of my last computer I lost the original Commissar Files I wrote up all those years ago as well as the update that turned the career into a series of linked alternate career ranks.

I think it is important to note that the original PDF works fine as is, but a Lord Commissar ascended career would work well if done correctly.

If I were to redo the original career ranks I wrote up (as I intend to do once my old computer gets saved, All hail the Omnissiah) I would revise some of the choices I gave the commissar to include hatred and litany of hate as talents (in the case of Hatred, I would make it available earlier) as well as a special talent or trait that allows the Commissar to use Intimidate or Command in the place of any standard interaction skill while deal with his troops. So litany of hate would go off command or intimidate instead of charm and so forth.

For a Commissar Lord, most of the advances available would be of the peer/contact variety as well as Unnatural Fellowship (despite my dislike of the Unnatural Characteristics as advances) to fit the theme of the other ascended careers and mastered skills that involve investigation and leadership and paragon talents that involve inspiration, leadership, swordplay and shooting folks in the head.

Commissars are the masters of psychological warfare. Unfortunately it is far easier to apply on you own troops.
Effect: If a number of troops in the area have failed Fear tests and if you can shoot and put down (inflict a critical hit on) one of their comrades they can immediately re-roll the result with bonus as if being assisted be the Commissars Intimidate skill.
The character can have 'friendly' troops re-roll pinning tests in the same way by throwing grenades into the friendlies cover. They must move out and towards the enemy if passed (flee the other way if failed) and the grenade explodes at the start of the Commissars next turn.

Characters Leaving this rank must move onto the Captain and is referred to as Captain Commissar. Likewise the Following rank is known as Commander Commissar.
