This might be interesting... Cosmic Format

By Greedo_Sharpshooter, in X-Wing

What if there was a format that combined multiple factions?

Rebel Alliance + The Resistance + The Republic + Scum & Villainy <<<VS>>> Galactic Empire + First Order + The Separatists + Scum & Villainy

Each mega faction has access to ships from 4 factions and these can all be played together in the same 200pt squad.

{EDIT: Each player selects any TWO factions available to them eg. Rebel Alliance + The Resistance or Galactic Empire + Scum & Villainy. Cosmic squads must contain at least one ship or upgrade card from each of the two selected factions}.

Scum is available to both mega factions.

Upgrades that are faction specific must still be used on ships from that faction.

I know, we are just getting our heads around Extended and Hyperspace, why do we need another format? Well, this lets you create squads that have never existed before. You could use Poe, Luke and Wedge in the same list! How about Howlrunner leading a swarm of Mining Guild Ties? Darth Vader and Kylo Ren teamed up together?

I realize this format mixes timelines and does not make sense in terms of starwars chronology. Its more for fun. I am calling this format Cosmic. It might be fun to try. Thoughts?

This would be fun to mess around with if you ask me. It would probably make for a really fun casual tournament once Wave 3 hits shelves. Like you said, it messes with the timeline, but honestly that doesn't bug me in a game where Anakin might wind up flying against an older, more crispy version of himself. I'd like to hear if you have any reasoning for keeping faction locked stuff on it's original faction, (I would love to try something stupid that frankly shouldn't be legal like a Fearless Norra Wexley) but the format itself sounds like some good casual fun all around.

Doh, I can't believe I forgot about that card. Can you tell I haven't actually played since Wave 2 came out and I don't own any FO stuff at all? lol

But yeah that would be nuts without the restriction. :P

Kylo + Palob... Poe + Jan Ors...

just really wanted to keep some indivuality between original factions but i can see it would be fun to allow any faction to use any card :)

all 3 falcons? rebel, resistance and scum :)

We haven't done it in 2.0 yet, but at home, we occasionally like to set up an epic game using ALL of our ships. Takes some balancing....

The 2.0 version, (with even more ships), will be kinda nuts.

Makes sense in an Epic-style format, with multiple players during a long game- something that you could play at a convention or something. I'd set it up like this-

Epic Cross-faction Match

Players- 3 per side

Total points- 450 per side, 150 per player

Rules- Each side must pick its forces from one of two faction lists. List 1 (Rebels, Resistance, Republic, Scum and Villiany) List 2 (Empire, First Order, Separatists, Scum and Villiany). Each individual player may pick any ships/pilots from within their side's chosen list of factions to compose their squad. All faction-specific upgrades are still required to obey their restrictions.

I believe you may find what you are looking for HERE .

Also I already made the custom formats on FFG's official X-wing app so you can save it to your app.

Let me know if you have any questions? ;)

Probably very difficult to balance. One would need to really carefully look at ALL the interactions and possible combinations. And probably ban certain cards or combos.

I remember, playing with kids in 1.0 ed we had for funsies Rebels and Scum flying together. We ended up having bomblet generator Cad Bane on a Quad and Sabine on a rebel bomb ship flying together, that was just totally ridiculuos :)

A triple Han list sounds friggin' hilarious to run.

Shouldn't it be CIS/rebels/resistance and Republic/empire/first order?

that has always been the question. Star Wars always had the light-dark spectrum for the force but it also always had the unification-independence spectrum for politics ever since the clone wars. That being said there are factions (besides Scum) that straddle the line. The Galactic Republic although would generally be considered the light side was under the control and influence of the Sith making it a Light/Dark alignment. As for the 1stOrder although being descendant from the Galactic Empire a unification politically aligned faction, their first act was to rebel against (and destroy) the New Republic making them more independence political alignment so they are half separatists.

Using my Alliance Wheel for A&M format I have added the boundaries of both spectrums. Notice that on some factions the line bisects the symbols. That was intentional to denote the factions that could be considered on both sides of the related spectrum.

Jedi wouldn't run with FRIGGIN' PALPATINE.

Well not Emperor Palpatine.

I would be all in for that since I enjoy messing with the rules and causing confusion just to see others sweat. I normally play 4player nightmare chess.

Okay so Clones, light or dark side because the army of the republic is clones and the clones ran with both Jedi and Palpatine.

As for A&M Format, Palpatine will have to bring his own shuttle. A&M allows faction mixing in lists but it doesn't ignore upgrade requirements. Emperor Palpatine needs to be put in an Empire ship.

Darth Sidious is an upgrade card we have already seen in the Republic ARC spread.

So lore is already a bit busted.

I'm gonna' TLT you guys.

Let's just pretend Delta-7s protecting TIEs and Lambdas makes perfect sense.

Nope, that is why I put them opposite from the Republic for my format.

Now of course there is a slight continuity problem with The 1st Order receiving the aid of Count Dooku (because he died before they exist), but since we are playing a game that allows you to have Biggs Darklighter face off against Kylo Ren I consider that only a minor stipulation. ;)
