Hate Kylo

By Smudger13, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hi all. Fair few games in to the FO now and I’m struggling to settle on a list I like.

I’ve heard two respected podcasts now promote the idea of Kylo with hate over SR.

I’ve also seen a number of frequent posters on this forum dismiss the idea out of hand.

He is super expensive and I want him to work - so I’d welcome any anecdotes in support or against this load out. Thanks!

If you take Hate over SR on Kylo, I think from a competitive list building perspective it means you have to include Null (or maybe Midnight) with Squad Leader. The biggest advantage of SR is that with Kylo's blue 2-turn, you're very hard for one ship to continuously keep you in its arc. Without it, Kylo isn't well equipped to 1v1 pilots that move after him.

Another thing is that during an attack, Hate would get resolved before ISYTDS, and Kylo doesn't have a way to spend force before the engagement phase, so there's a chance you get no benefit there.

Against a generic swarm, it's much easier to get caught in a net of firing arcs without SR, Hate might get you an extra point of force to use over 2-3 attacks, but that's not a situation you want Kylo to be in since he's so expensive.

Out of all the pilots with 2 or more force that can equip hate (Kanan + Maul, Vader, Seventh Sister, Grand Inquisitor, Asajj), Kylo is the one that makes the least use of it.

Unnamed Squadron (199)

Ship Total: 91

"Quickdraw" — TIE/SF Fighter45

"Null" — TIE/FO Fighter31
Squad Leader4

Played Optics/Hate on Kylo the other day. Very consistent damage, hate didnt do much though.

I think hate is more of a failsafe if you get shot at by several ships to continue modding those defensive dice.

This. Hate has two advantages:

  • It's a knockoff of luke skywalker's ability, meaning you can spend your force on attack and defence rolls and recover it faster than you should otherwise, making his dice more efficient - Advanced Optics is a great pairing as force handles focus results, optics handle blank results
  • It's cheaper. Supernatural reflexes is 9 points more. Thats quite a lot - enough to give him torpedoes, for example.

I rather think it's the reverse. By the time you're in the endgame, if you've lost neither Kylo nor a putative I6-7 squad leader, you've already probably won.

Hate makes Kylo not your endgame piece of choice . You're making him cheaper, and giving him more force tokens as he gets destroyed, to turn him into a force-spitting, dark-side-showing, torpedo-lobbing kamikaze. He's expensive, but not catastrophically more so than Captain Oicunn or a kitted-out Bossk, and that's what they are traditionally used for.

Accept Kylo can't dance around like a brooding emo ninja, look at who else you have (Midnight remains an awesome 1v1 duellist despite being a TIE fighter) and use Kylo to take out whoever they don't want to fight in the opening stages whilst your opponent fixates on "kill the silencer kill the silencer...."

So played hate kylo today, with midnight and Quickdraw.

I really liked it. Up against a SR Kylo, I felt my damage output and survivability were noticeably different (optics was excellent).

This obviously doesn’t account for players who can simply keep Kylo out of arc with SR - I’m not that good!

The weak link actually felt like Quickdraw, who hits far weaker than 1.0 and burns quicker too.

So really it’s a question of what to put with Kylo and the ever annoying Midnight

I think this list would have major difficulties against a SNR Kylo. Null, Quickdraw list. Especially if the bid was low enough to assure me that SNR Kylo could not worry about anything. Engaging and shooting at I7 is incredibly good. Even if SNR had to move first I'd still be very confident in the list. With output and manuveribility.

I could easily remove Cluster Missiles from QD for the 5 point bid. You'd have to catch my Kylo before I killed yours and Midnight wouldnt be an issue will the I7 Swarming ships

Something like this would be very effective. If you choose to bring Kylo to a fight you make sure he has all six bullets in the chamber.

TIE/vn Silencer - •Kylo Ren - 103
•Kylo Ren - Tormented Apprentice (82)
Proton Torpedoes (9)
Supernatural Reflexes (12)

TIE/sf Fighter - •“Quickdraw” - 63
•“Quickdraw” - Defiant Duelist (45)
Fire-Control System (3)
Cluster Missiles (5)
Special Forces Gunner (10)

TIE/fo Fighter - •“Null” - 34
•“Null” - Epsilon Ace (31)
Swarm Tactics (3)

Total: 200/200

I think that the ultimate thing about Kylo is that he is best with SR, but not bad naked. If you don't have the points for SR, another pilot is almost certainly better, but if you still want Kylo, then you could run him naked, but if you have the points, Hate ain't bad

This. Even with no upgrades, Kylo Ren still has a recurring force token and autothrusters, meaning he's getting a free calculate and a free boost or barrel roll every turn.

That's not bad in a game where you normally have to work hard for your action economy.....
