Urban Camo Rebel Troopers idea.

By Kingsguard, in Painting

Hello. So far I have worked hard to paint my Fleet Troopers and Princess Leia exactly as they appear in the movies but for the standard Rebel Troopers I was tempted to do something unique. It's a very tough call between painting them up like the Endor Rebels in ROTJ and painting them up my own way, but I have painted up my first prototype custom trooper so see how my own idea works. Obviously he still needs some touchups but he's fully painted now.

I decided to go with an urban camouflage pattern. I really like that pattern and it's pretty flexible, being good in urban environments as well as snow and even okay in a desert. I decided to try leaving his hat colored exactly like the ones in the movies with the idea that leaving some items colored in a familiar way would keep my troopers feeling like they still fit in the StarWars universe. I am going to keep working on the rebel badges. They look a bit derpy right now.

What's everyone think? Any suggestions?

Really nice job painting the camo! The freehand rebel insignia is really good too.

The tricky thing about camo is it works, it hides edges on stuff and most of miniatures painting is accentuating edges so tiny things are clear. I'd recommend doing a thin filter or two, probably using the tan from the hat, to unify everything and tone it down a bit. Then do a couple gentle washes to recapture some of the folds and details.

I'm not too knowledgeable in painting. What's a "Filter"?

Filter is a term from the scale armor world... It's a very very transparent glaze of a single color, like 5% ish percent opacity. Its for toning down and unifying camo patterns. So use a lot of medium but just a bit of water so it doesn't pool like a wash.

Hmm. okay, thanks.

I really like that look!

...urban camo...hiding in the gravel gray groove!...
