Resistance Checks

By Titanium Mage, in Rules Questions

Hello,

I’m confused about resistance checks for Invocations. When a resistance check is called for it lists the skills needed but also lists two rings with different numbers.

For example: Tempest of Air has a resist of, TN 4 Fitness check (Earth 5, Fire 2) or suffer the Disoriented condition. What do the elements and numbers in the parenthesis mean?

Thank You.

These are variable TNs depending on the Ring used by the target to resist (typically the one corresponding to the stance they were in when the effect hit them).

For tempest of Air, it’s a TN 4 for most Rings, but if the target is in Earth stance / use Earth ring with their Fitness roll, the TN becomes 5; while in Fire Stance it’s only 2. Maybe this means that if you try to dig in and adopt a cautious approach, it will be harder not to be swept away, but if you rush into the storm, you’ll have an easier time.

@Franwax got it right, and may possibly be some kind of shinobi, sweeping in just as I was about to say the same thing.

Thank you very much. Is this stated somewhere in the book? My group and I are new to the game and I would like to have a page reference just in case my GM asks for it.

Page 296, in the section on “varying difficulty”, is a pretty clear explanation on how this works. Cheers!

Thanks a bunch good people.
