If you Slam with Black One and then use Static Discharge Vanes to give the Ion token to another ship instead, can the Black One still remove the disarm token?
Black One + Static Discharge Vanes
No. Gaining the ion is a cost of using black one to remove the disarm. If someone else gains it you don't so you didn't pay the cost and don't get the benefit.
Aw... no Nien Nunb shenanigans, then.
are we really sure about this? this is the same interaction as static discharge vanes / feedback array and Overseer Yushyn / Foreman Proach.
very interesting indeed. as static discharge vanes is a replacement effect, the ion token is never considered to have been gained, so maybe you don't get to remove the disarmed token.
how ever, gaining the ion token is just part of the ability. there is an argument to be made that the ability should be resolved as far as possible, even if you replaced the gaining of the ion token with something else.
There's no 'damayc' rule in X-Wing.
There IS a replacement effects rule, that clearly applies here.
After you perform a SLAM action, lose 1 . Then you may gain 1 ion token to remove 1 disarm token.
If your charge is inactive, you cannot perform the SLAM action.
Before you would gain 1 ion or jam token, if you are not stressed, you may choose another ship at range 0-1 and gain 1 stress token. If you do, the chosen ship gains that ion or jam token instead.
RePlacement effects
Some abilities are substitutive in nature—they replace how an effect would
normally resolve. These abilities use the words “would” and “instead.”
•Replacement effects are not added to the end of the ability queue
as they are resolved at the timing of the effect they are replacing.
• When a replacement effect resolves, the replaced effect is treated as
having not occurred.
◊ For example, Jyn Erso’s ability says “If a friendly ship at range 0–3
would gain a focus token, it may gain 1 evade token instead.” If this
ability is used, an effect that triggers after a ship gains a focus token
cannot trigger.
• If there are multiple replacement effects that could substitute for the
same effect, only one effect can be substituted for the original effect.
◊ For example, a ship is about to gain a focus token and has both the
ability “Before you would gain a focus token, gain an evade token
instead” and the ability “Before you would gain a focus token, gain a
calculate token instead.” Only one of those abilities could be resolved.
It's pretty clear from the bolded section that replacing 'gain one ion token' with 'choose another ship to gain one ion token, and gain one stress token' means you didn't gain an ion, so no disarm removal.
Unless we're interpreting the whole thing wrong. I wouldn't be too surprised if the Replacement Effects rule is changed since it breaks Yushyn/Proach, which means that they're both pretty useless.

yup, i pretty much agree all the way through, thanks for stating all of it coherently!
i don't know that i'm 100% convinced that the replacement effect example is applicable to this interaction, though, but for now i understand why it should be applied here as well.
i think the intent is there for it to work, even though it's not clearly written. i even agree that it's written more like it wouldn't work as well, especially the "If you do, " part.
thanks for keeping me honest.
hrm. on one hand, i'd like for this interaction to work with feedback array and ushyn/proach. on the other hand i don't want it to work with nien numb and black one.
