Hate Vader Swarm - Hyperspace

By Shockley, in X-Wing Squad Lists

What are peoples initial thoughts on Vader with Hate?

Vader should have SR. He doesn't want to get hit, and SR helps that

Vader really really needs FCS

I'd be interested in hearing how this list does, if you care to share.

Hate Vader is trading a lot of maneuverability for force sustainability, so you probably want to maximize Vader's offense, lead with the TIE Swarm, and bring Vader down on the most troublesome part of your opponent's list.

Proton Rockets (7)

“Howlrunner” (40)

Iden Versio (40)

“Wampa” (30)

If he's essentially becoming a heavy fighter, I agree you've got the right gear for him - Fire Control is incredibly cheap for the effectiveness on a TIE/x1, and proton rockets are the hardest hitting thing his missile slot will let him carry.

I'm not convinced by the wingmen, though:

Howlrunner benefits herself, Iden and Wampa but Vader is likely to want to roll out of range 1, and - with Fire Control - probably doesn't need the reroll that much.

Iden is mostly there to keep Howlrunner alive.

You're sinking a lot of points into two TIE fighters who mostly just benefit themselves. With a swarm formed around them, they're great, but as 2/3 of your entire TIE fighter force I'm less convinced.

Bear in mind that "Scourge" and "Mauler" are only 32 points each for two I5 pilots with "roll an extra attack die" abilities. Throw them in alongside "Wampa" and you've got a much more credible 3-man squad

  • Darth Vader
    • Hate
    • Fire Control System
    • Proton Rockets
  • "Mauler" Mithel
    • Swarm Tactics
  • "Scourge" Skutu
    • Predator
  • "Wampa"

Saves no less than 14 points, leaving 20 total - enough for two shield upgrades or sets of afterburners (I'd probably pick Vader & Scourge). For that matter, dropping Swarm Tactics would let you field a 4th TIE fighter.

The TIE Swarm portion of the list is definitely to taste. Howl + 3 Academy would leave an 8 point bid.

I'll run this list tomorrow night just for you 👍

In my experience flying Fel Vader Sai, aka Asa's Aces from the Mynock open, it's not really needed with good force management.

I want to keep Vader very light so that the Mini Swarm can be a threat and hopefully pull shots from Vader. If Vader is attacked first it let's Howl do what she does longer and I'll probably switch to using force for defense and run.

Ran this list yesterday against 4x I5 Resistance XXAA. Only played for 45 minutes before calling it early. Iden refused to die. My opponent was only able to put 2 damage on him while an academy took damage from a rock. I killed Ello Asty in 3 rounds and knocked a shield off of an A Wing. With the point change I added afterburners to Vader. I may try the list is this configuration next time. I figure Wampa complicates the opponent's targeting even more.

This works really good. I don't think any rockets on Vader are useless.

And you have 4 points bid you can spend on advanced sensors if you want to change afterburners on it.

Advanced sensors on Vader not ideal (my opinion) as you limit his ability to chain actions. Afterburners are very tasty on Vader. I'd say keep them on :)

Advanced sensors are useful on non-SNR vader because he is vulnerable to being blocked. Getting caught without a target lock feels really bad. That being said, afterburners are much better use of the points imo.

Lambda Shuttle with Grand Inquisitor crew can help Vader avoid getting blocked like he has SNR (list stolen from this forum tbh) - extra props if you use Kagi so he can't be target locked either XD

Jumping into this thread for curiousity. Having flown against Marc's Hate-Vader/Imdaar list at the Open it peaked my interest. Vader was surprisingly resilient.

My own (untested) hyperspace list was more swarmy, but I have concerns in my ability to convert with such a list.

  • 197 Points
  • Vader - Hate, FCS
  • 3x Black Sqdn - Crackshot
  • 2x Academy

I like it.

If I was gonna do a Hyperspace Vader Swarm, it would probably look something like...

(65) Darth Vader [TIE Advanced x1]
(6) Afterburners
(3) Hate
Points: 74

(34) Planetary Sentinel [TIE/sk Striker]
Points: 34

(28) Valen Rudor [TIE/ln Fighter]
(1) Crack Shot
Points: 29

(38) Tempest Squadron Pilot [TIE Advanced x1]
(2) Fire-Control System
Points: 40

(23) Academy Pilot [TIE/ln Fighter]
Points: 23

Total points: 200

I think Vader with Iden/Howl/Academies is probably one of the best lists in the game right now.
