Ole Papa Palpatine

By Darth Sanguis, in Star Wars: Legion

Has anyone had a chance to test him out? I made an army with him, 3 guards and 3 storm troopers, I feel like it may not be the strongest list. Anyone who's used him, I'd love to hear how he works.

My step brother likes to run him with Veers, 2x sniper teams, and 2x royal guard squads, as well as 3 DLT squads. I'm not sure you need Tenacity on the Royal Guard squads personally, but to each their own.

Well, I guess my plan was to bum rush with them... They have charge after all. I figured there's likely no way they'll make it fully intact to their targets, so that extra die will make up for the losses. Plus with Palpy backing them up and giving extra attacks, I feel like they could be brutal

I haven’t tried them but I would assume its a matter of playing smart and using terrain. Its even more so with the wookies since they have expert climber but white dice defense

Unfortunately our terrain isn't 100% (I'm the only one buying in to terrain, so it's only my stuff). But yes, terrain would definitely come into play.

I played him and two squads of Royals on one side of the table this week. They dominated that side of the table. Palp and one squad of royals might be enough. I had limited visibility, so I was able to move in fast.

Depending on your terrain and local playstyles, I would encourage environmental gear to keep the guards from slowing down.

I've been using Emergency Stims to keep the extra guy alive long enough to make melee contact.

Palp is glorious when he can get close enough to zap a bunch of enemies. I had anger, force reflexes and force push on him. I'll likely change force push to force choke to make sure i'm not wasting a big attack on a little unit.

yeah, basically keep him alive with GUardian until he's within range of 3-4 units and then he disintegrates them with lightning. DLT softens them up. I think the sniper striker teams are more useful than some of the extraneous upgrades on the units. One Royal Guard should be dedicated to taking hits for Palpy, the others can charge forth. I think 3 units of RG is overkill but if you've got them, then use them. Another Stormtrooper unit or Strike Teams is probably better use of the points, but whatever floats your boat.

Haven’t had a chance to play or face him yet, that force lightning is intimidating though!

PS what squad builder is that picture from?

In the games I've used with Palp I've seen that the royal guards rely on Palp more than he relies on them and their guardian. His pulling the strings shoots them forward extremely fast into melee with enemy units which is very effective and then they can't attack Palpy since they're stuck in melee. And then when he's close enough to a load of enemy units his one pip card is so powerful and wipes out anything and everything!

What program did you use to build that list?

That's the rub, you have to pick your poison, you can die from Palpatine or you can die from Royal Guards. Or you can be indecisive, and die by both

So it's death either way woo-hoo!

This was made in Fab’s army builder.

He's probably best near the center of the table. Let the guards decide where to go as the game develops.

Range 2 from a center objective should threaten a large part of the board. Also makes him a big target.

So I got a chance to use him before the holiday. Holy crap is he good. I ran this list and he managed to creep up on a huddle of enemy troops with his entourage of red pajama ninjas... after a standard attack and 3 bursts of "now you will die" my opponent had 2 units dead, 2 more with only a single wound or unit left and completely suppressed. I rushed the pajama ninjas in to tie up the remaining units in melee. I lost Ole papa palpatine but not before wiping 5 units and his commander off the board... Took the objectives and moped up with my stormies. Hella good game.

I played a game against him where he really could do no wrong, anecdotal, but he killed 2 units, full health Leia and Emergency Stims Han in 2 turns. Han had taken 1 wound and had 2 in the Stims from 1 turn (gaining cover), then "Now you will die" put another 5 damage on Han, 6 on Leia, and wiped out a strike unit and 4man z6 unit. It was gruesome.

My opponent was such a good sport but I could tell he was getting so salty about it. He was in complete disbelief, kept asking if he could keep attacking like that. I let him read the card and he laughs and says, "Well, at least I learned if there's a senile old man running around a battlefield in his bathrobes and a bunch of dudes in red pajamas chasing him... they probably belong there". lol It was a hilarious game.

definitely my first time in this game where I had to read the cards and wished I had know about them ahead of time. I would changed tactics from deployment's outset if I had known what his command cards did ahead of time. He's powerful, but a lot of mistakes on my part and some really good rolling on his part. I shot and rolled pretty well all game but he literally never rolled more than one blank at a time with his red and white defense dice. I barely took his Guard down at the turn 5 mark and they were sitting out in the open all game.

can't wait to play again, as I'm sort of starting to figure out how to play Han. I still feel like the range 2 pistols are a severe handicap as it takes 2 turns to get them in position sometimes.

I got lucky on my placement too. He accidentally placed an objective on my side near the deployment zone. My pajama ninjas all has scout from the recon intel, so round 1 I flipped 3 objectives, his only chance was to kill all my troops before round 6. He had me outnumbered, so I don't think he knew what Palpatine did when he started clustering troops together. Palpatine jumped a barricade, took his free dodge action, and then lit up a squad of unsuspecting troopers. Followed by Veers another trooper and an e-web... anger giving him an aim for each wound. It was brutal.

...nice werk...really like your imp guards....the red is bloody nice...

I feel like I’ve seen that At At in a lot of photos:)

Very nice guards. I think the deeper red of their underclothes looks sharp.

what paints did you use on your royal guards?

Army Painter black primer spray can. I used Vallejo scarlet red for the under robes. Army painter pure red for the over robes, boots, and helmet. Army painter matte black for the staffs and the highlights on the helmets. The gloves are a custom mix of army painter matte black and white. I used Citadel nuln oil to apply a wash to the under robes, gloves and staffs (careful not to touch the over robes with the wash). Then finished the whole thing off by applying a matte varnish to the over robes, under robes, boots, and gloves and a gloss varnish to the helmet and staff.

Thanks, and it's no problem! For Ole papa palpy I used Army painter black primer spray can. Applied 2 coats of thinned army painter matte black to everything except the face and hands. I used army painter pale corpse to color the skin. I used citadel nuln oil to apply a wash to the face and hands being careful to wipe away excessive pooling on the face. I wanted just enough to highlight his features. once those dried I applied a matte varnish to every thing except his bow tie and cane, which were varnished in gloss.
