Just a minor thing - our club had a Quick Build event last night. I was there in passing, dropping off Christmas presents*, and saw the participation prizes - some new quick build cards.
I've seen the Black Squadron Ace quick build card that was at the original launch event before, and thought it was gorgeous - awesome art, and all the (fixed) upgrades for the pilot on one card. A great idea!
So....looking and seeing there was another TIE fighter in the prize deck intrigued me and I wondered who it was. It turned out to be Iden Versio:
Thing is, it's not Iden Versio.
In the Quick Build PDF, and Quick Build Card, the only legal option for Iden Versio I have access to is Outmanouvre/Shield Upgrade. If I'm at an event where I need to use 'official' materials, I can't field the 'new Iden' - who's dramatically changed, not least because she's picked up a white Target Lock action on her bar for some reason (I know Inferno Squadron had ordnance but if I was creating a 'missile TIE fighter' I'd have given it Proton Rockets - or Barrage Rockets - for this reason), whilst someone who can produce the official Deluxe Kit Iden Versio can lob torpedoes around with her.
It's not earth-shaking, it's a minor gripe and if I'm being brutally honest with myself, a non-trivial part of it is unjustified sour grapes for not making it to the event because of many unavoidable things broadly falling under the banner of "Adulting".
But part of it is genuine concern. I did play D&D Attack Wing, and many friends played Star Trek Attack Wing, and whilst all of us liked the fact that the Organised Play events often came with unique scenarios, one thing that we all disliked was Wizkid's tendancy to introduce Participation-Exclusive or Prize-Exclusive ships/dragons. FFG's approach of Alternative Art characters is fine, but when attending gets you a new ship that you cannot get any other way and which is genuinely better than the 'normal' version , you start storing up balance issues, and a certain amount of angst for later.
I'd love to see this alternate version of Iden Versio added to the quick build .pdf, but I'm not sure you can even do that, since there's no logical way to denote adding the target lock action.
Don't get me wrong; I'm happy to see new and varied quick builds, or event-specific ones, or whatever, and as new stuff comes out, revising quick build options to add alternatives with new stuff is good practice. And I know I can ebay, beg, borrow or steal one off friends, or just use a print-out of the image above. I like the quick-build approach - in many ways more than 'standard' points values. But please don't issue ones that someone who doesn't make it to an event misses the chance to 'legally' access.
* Ho, ho, bloody ho**.
** Humbug .
