Random Observations; Apples2Apples; Rebels2Resistance Reds; 4 Black Squadron Aces

By Cloaker, in X-Wing

Hmm. I know I shouldn't do this, but I can't help it. I started really playing rebels now because they're the underdog faction and I know there is probably some sort of great justification for this, but it still just feels wrong.

Red Squadron Veteran (43)
Shield Upgrade (6)

Total: 49

vs.

Red Squadron Expert (48)

Total: 48

With a Shield Upgrade to make thing fair for health (and more importantly, half point threshold MOV) For 1 point more, the Rebels lose the blue 3 forward, and the opportunity to use primary at full value with wings closed. Same as with The Cavern Angels Zealot vs. Blue Sq. Rookie.

Minor quibble. I just hope maybe they bring down the T-65 a point except for the initiative 1 to prevent 5 in a list. But for now, if one were wanting to fly 4 T-65s generics in No Glory, RSEs would be better. Well, four Black Squadron Ace T-70s would REALLY be better, but I guess FFG knew that since that's the chase card pilot for Second Edition to make us either buy 3 more flappy models, or 3 more conversion kits, or whatever between both.

Jeez, if one wanted to fly 4 Black Squadron Aces they're paying at least $82 retail if not found on aftermarket. That's just crazy.

There’s gotta be more than 1 BSA in the conversion kit.

Also, point adjustments come January. Expect some things to fall more in line.

Shield upgrade, as with other upgrades that just add to stats like Hull upgrade, are intentionally inefficient. Otherwise, you would have little reason not to take them.

Also, who cares? Who the actual **** is spamming Black Squadron aces? This is a remarkably arbitrary quibble that I couldn't care less about if I tried.

There's only one in mine. One card and a base token with BSA on both sides. It was so easy for them to have put another in. But, I guess there needs to be something else to help sell the packs.

See I think a bit differently on this I guess. I think the price to protect threshold on even number health ships is going to become more and more of a competitive factor. I'd gladly put a hull upgrade on Boba, or on a B-Wing / U-Wing to make it just a bit more difficult to score half points. In a way, Hull upgrade and shield upgrade are perhaps the best modifications in the game right now. They protect points a bit more for even numbered health. But then again, that's just my experience so far. They've played a great role for me.

I guess to put it differently, it's less efficient to pay the points for these upgrades than if the stat just came standard on your ship. That's not to say they're always the wrong call, they just didn't want them to always be the right one which makes them a poor way to compare ships.

The Black Squadron Ace is just kind of a pointless ship. You go from I3 on the Red Vet to I4 on the Black Ace for 2pts, but 3-4 is the worst initiative transition because you were already above generics and you're still below most aces. You also already had the EPT, so it doesn't help for that. TL:DR, it very much seemed to me like a ship they included more for completion sake rather than something they expected anyone to care about...and they're basically right.

Yeah, as the game expands for upgrades some things will be way better for sure. I played a No Glory format recently, and it was fun not having a bunch of named pilots throwing their weight all around. It was certainly a lot more pew pew.

For me, the big advantage the RSV has over the RSE is that after 4 x-wings, you have enough points left over in rebels to take a Z with missiles. Not the case for Resistance.
