Sarlacc Pit

By Welshie13, in Terrain Building

I am thinking of doing a Sarlacc pit for my Tatooine theme, has anyone tried/thought about doing something similar? So far I have a suitable scaled piece for the head, will dig out or build up some terrain and add teeth for the pit. Unsure of how to do the tentacles yet. So far all my terrain is build from recycled odds and ends found in a science lab.

I was also playing with the idea of a rule that it can wound models touching it (single red dice at the end of round for any model or unit touching?). Has anyone else played around with wounding terrain? I know some people have discussed the idea of neutral beasts such as rancors. I think it would be fun to have Luke and Boba battle it our deja vu style.

I've started one but scrapped it and trying to figure out a better way to do it. I did see on Instagram a guy in Spain made a 3d print that is beautiful... The tentacles could just be green stuff rolled over a texture. That was my plan.

As for Dangerous Terrain: My idea was to make it like the Mines condition and have a defensive roll to see if it goes off before the damage is dealt out for each unit X distance from Sarlac or touching terrain. If the piece is dealing out too much damage, even if there is an objective there, it won't see much play unless you try to force the point.

Edit: here it is:

I used a chunk of Celfort foam, dug it out and used toothpicks as teeth :)

Now I want to make a hexagon tile for my desert board with a sarlaac in it.

Do it! Having thickness to tiles like your Geo-hex set up would be the ideal setup for something that lives in a pit. I've been thinking about making my own terrain tiles to do something similar, myself.

Yeah I thought about that too. But the Geo-Hex sets are too cheap to justify making my own. The "basic" set is like $125. For the cost of foam, paint, flock, and worn out cutting tools, I couldn't have made it for that. It gives you enough flat tiles to cover a 4x4 table, plus a good hill setup. I didn't know a basic set won't cover a 3x6 table in flat tiles, so later on I ordered like 4 more half-hexes and a couple full hexes. And the "rough hill" set to match the look of the old WEG book. Eventually I added a 6x4 matching felt mat so that I can use ALLLLLL my tiles to make one big sloping hillside for a battle on a real-life sized hill, like Little Roundtop, if I want.

On that matter of "real life size" terrain... I just did the math... unless I did it wrong it seems like an average Wal Mart is larger than our Legion battlefields.

Assuming a 1:48 scale, a 6' x 3' tabletop would be the equivalent to a 288' x 144' area, or 41,472 square feet, which is a little less than an acre. Wikipedia (for whatever that's worth) lists the "average" Walmart store at around 105,000 square feet, or more than twice the size.

The farthest point on that hypothetical battlefield, from one corner to the opposite corner, would only be about 322' feet, well within the range of almost any rifle with open or iron sights. Marksmen consistently made shots like that back as far as the American Revolutionary War.

This is why old SW had a blaster rifle with a range of 150" and typically models could move a foot or so per turn. That actually has it's own barrel of issues. The main thing to me is that they need to keep movement in scale with weapon ranges, though not necessarily in scale with model height. Two different simultaneous scales essentially.

This is the exact point. In most historical wargames, the assumption is that the individual model soldiers each represent 10 or more troops and the ground scale is greatly compressed. This is why the ranges seem too short.

A lot of historical games also go for the apparent averages instead of outlying examples too. Which annoys those who take nationalistic myths about famous battles too seriously.

In the process of painting up my Sarlacc. Will post pic as soon as finished. Below is the unpainted version. Basically a 'Hero scale' version with slightly chunky head and tentacles (latex glove fingers, stuffed with tissue). Also been thinking about rules for the neutral unit. Was thinking activation at end of round only. Whilst it in throry can one shot a hero it is highly unlikely as a few shots on target will always allow escape. It should make a nice centre piece that is a minor neutral tactical distraction.

Awesome!

This is a terrain piece that FFG should release!

Is the "beak" one of those weighted paper holders?

Yup got it first time.

So I was motivated to use my 3D printer to create one, even though I am doing more of an Endor themed board. I got it off Thingiverse..

https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3161404

I scaled it down to 35% and printed it out in two pieces. The tongue is roughly 30mm. I still have to add the teeth, then finish off the outside.

I figure difficult ground on the hillside leading up to the hole and impassable over the hole for everything but repulsor vehicles.

Nice Sarlaac pits. Though I think of I build one myself, I'll go with the pre-1997 non-beaked variety.

Just got myself a desert skiff to go with my Sarlacc. Once its finished I will have myself a nice little Sarlacc fight diarama, though I need a second Luke with a ROTJ paint scheme to be film accurate.
