Pattern Analyzer allowing 2 actions with Nien Nunb?

By enigmahfc, in X-Wing Rules Questions

So Nunb allows you to remove stress if an enemy ship is in range 1.

After you gain a stress token, if there is an enemy ship in your V at range 0-1, you may remove that stress token.

and Pattern analyzer says:

While you fully execute a red maneuver, before the Check Difficulty step, you may perform 1 action.

so could you do a red move, do the PA action, clear that stress, then do another action? I kind of feel like that's not what the card was meant to do, but Rules Lawyers and FFG's bang up job on technical writing means it could go either way.

Yes this works, as PA just grants an extra action rather than moving the step. This also lets it work over asteroids.

Well, kinda. You get the Pattern Analyzer action if you fly over an asteroid, you don't get your normal perform action step.

Thinking for a hot second on this, it's one more reason why it'll be a scary upgrade on Quadjumpers. S-Loop onto a rock, then toss your opponent.

Technically, you can get a significant number of actions with Nien Nunb, with PA, BB-8, Static Discharge Vanes, and Black One... if you really wanted to. Consider...

  1. After revealing a blue 3-straight, you can perform a Boost action.
  2. Execute your 3-straight, then use Black One to SLAM into a 3-talon roll, right behind an enemy.
  3. After completing the SLAM, choose to take an ion token instead of disarm, and use Static Discharge to pass it the ion, in exchange for stress.
    • Nien Nunb then sheds BOTH stress tokens (from the Static Discharge and the T-Roll) thanks to his pilot ability.
  4. Your choice: Lock , or Focus linked to a Barrel Roll to line up the bullseye shot (and strip stress AGAIN if needed).

Add to step 2:

  • Before the check difficulty step of the red SLAM maneuver, use Pattern Analyzer to perform a Focus action.
  • If you started with closed S-foils, link that to a red Barrel Roll to get perfect line up or inch into range and discard that stress with Nien's pilot ability.

Then at step 4 you only have Lock left as an available action! :)

If you drop the discharge vanes for Advanced Slam, you can do ALL THE ACTIONS! :o

But then you can't ALSO dump a surprise ion onto your new combat buddy.

Nien 4k's behind enemy ship, but ends at range 2. PA to boost into range 1. Does his ability trigger at this point, allowing him to clear the stress and perform his normal action step?

Yes. He would boost, receive the stress token, trigger his ability, and arrive at his perform action step.

True, but you do get a fully double-modded shot... so there a benefits to both builds ;)

Indeed. It is also cheaper, but it's also only useful as part of the one-use Black One, whilst the more expensive discharge vanes un-ionize you and ionize the opponent and might be useful against some putative enemy ion weapon or jammer elsewhen in the game.

I think Advanced SLAM is probably better for Snap or Ello, but since Nien is aiming for range 1 anyway, and ignores the stress downside if he gets it, I'd rather take the vanes.
