Heroic and my change of heart

By Icelom, in X-Wing

What I keep coming back to is that Heroic feels really well priced. It's worth about 1/3rd to 1/5th of a reroll, and costs 1/3rd to 1/5th the price of upgrades which plain get you that reroll (X-Wing: no offense, 1/3rd of Elusive) (A-Wing: 1/5th offense, 1/5th defense, 1/5th of Predator+Elusive).

So it's the same effect as other Talents, just scaled down. It's not as big, but it's a lot cheaper.

Exception: Heroic and Finn on a Falcon. A Falcon will roll a blank 3/8ths of the time on it's single green die, Finn can add the 2nd blank blank, and then reroll both dice. That's kinda solid, and a decent number of Falcons probably have Finn anyhow.

Personally, I find the comparison to Predator or Trick Shot as odd. Heroic is pure random chance (and admittedly slim chance), but it's always on. Predator and Trick Shot require positioning that isn't necessarily reliable on a lot of pilots. Heroic is always there. Doesn't matter what you do, what your opponent does, or how skilled you are at taking advantage.

And I am very glad of this!

it does mean that my generic X-Wing with four hitpoints left can form up on the flank and know for certain that there's no way my opponent's ace gets out of this without being shot by me (I can't get killed before I shoot because the odds of my opponent doing maximum damage are almost zero).

This. " I know I'm taking a kicking but I'm not going to get one-shotted " is a good thing. It's why in 1.0 that 4th hit point on a striker made such a difference compared to the 3 hits of fighters and interceptors; even if you were easier to hit, a 3-dice attack couldn't kill you without something like Direct Hit! - if I made you throw 2 attacks at it to kill it, it was 'tough enough '

True. But as an opportunity cost you're not then using Rey & Finn (because Rey has a force power slot not a talent)

Heroic/Finn on Chewie is a nasty combination, but then, giving it the benefit of the doubt, is it massively worse than the Rebel version of the falcon, which can potentially reroll its evade die twice before committing tokens to it? (Han's ability and the Rebel version of the Milennium Falcon title)

Fair. But running Rey with Finn means you can't run Rey gunner anywhere. :D

And while it isn't necessarily much better than Rebel Han/MF+Evade, it's a place where Heroic kind of makes a huge step up in power level, adding like 0.3 evades, rather than 0.1 evades per attack.

No real argument, just that there are a bunch of ways to organize the lists.

I'll happily run it on I3, I4, or I6 pilots, but if I've got an I5 ace in my list and it's gotten to 190+ points, Heroic's getting cut for the bid.
