What's next for the rebel faction

By Wrecker01, in X-Wing

What new content will be created for the rebel faction? Which ship has not been made yet?

What can we hope to get in the next few waves beside ships released in X-Wing 1.0?

I'm afraid the players of the rebel faction will have to wait for a long time.

I actually wouldn't expect much new for Rebels except releasing previous 1.0 ships into 2.0. At least, not for a while. There's not a lot of mainstream ships missing, and meanwhile there's a lot of content waiting for re-release.

To answer the question posed in the title of the thread: rereleases.

There should be new pilots for many of the ships, but I wouldn’t expect much more for a while.

I would expect a Falcon rerelease for Rebels next, not sure when or what could be the next new ship.

A and B wings are certainly the most wanted rereleases, broadly speaking.

A-wings and B-wings in wave 4. Book it.

While you're likely not wrong:

  • Falcon is Hyperspace legal... new players need a way to get one
  • Falcon is heavily thematic to even those with only passing knowledge of the franchise

All this plus you add the fact that it will have at minimum new paint and possibly new sculpt to tempt those of us who are really fond of this ship to add yet another copy to our collections.

Oh, for sure, I meant on top of the Falcon. Most iconic ship in the franchise is a no-brainer even for FFG.

For all new content, nothing really springs to mind that is a "ship" in the strictest sense. T-47 air-speeder is all I got really that was in a movie and isn't in the game yet. FFG did a good job hitting all the high points for the Rebels, even going so far as to include my beloved YT-2400, and a Wookie ship too. Pretty much every roll is covered, and all their most iconic platforms accounted for. Towards the end of 1st edition, FFG was introducing me to ships I'd never heard of like the K-wing.

For returning ships, the one's I'd prefer are the A and B wings, but I'm expecting the Rebel Falcon re-release soon due to Hyperspace. I really want the YT-2400 re-release to come sooner rather than later, but I would totally understand it not showing up until wave 6 or later.

They should really just re-release a single Falcon for Rebels and Resistance with a swappable satellite dish for the top, but it seems like they're moving away from cross-faction releases.

My money for Wave 4 is the B-wing. I think the A-wing will wait as the Resistance A-wing is out there. While we're probably looking at just a straight re-release with the classic paint scheme, they could shake things up with the prototype paint seen in Rebels and give it folding wings.

I imagine the two new TV series Disney have commissioned should offer something.

In the near future, a Falcon re-release with no new content seems very likely. A and B wing re-releases with new pilots at a minimum, and maybe 1 or 2 new upgrades also seems very likely. Whether all of the that comes in Wave 4, or is split between Wave 4 and Wave 5 (With maybe 1 other ship tossed in) is anybody's guess.

The Cassian show in particular offers some prime opportunity.

At the same time, I'd almost prefer to see more recurrence of currently Canon ships and perhaps introduction of the remaining Legends material (K-Wing, E-Wing) than new ships altogether. Given the amount of material currently in existence for the GCW period, there's not too much room for new ships of this era, and what is introduced should have a reason not to be seen in other places (ultra-specialized, ultra-expensive, poor quality, limited production run, etc.).

They handled this pretty well in Rebels IMO, with the TIE Defender production getting basically cut off and removing their primary advocate, though leaving the option of introducing more later (I heard there were some at Jakku and I don't remember if there were at Endor).

I beleave the re-release so far did not include any new content, it was stuff already included in the conversions kits. You think we'll get new pilots or new upgrades with futur re-release?

I wouldn't expect anything new from those. At least not from the Cassian one. The Mandolorian has a shot at being it's own thing, thanks to a combination of it's setting, time period, and following someone that isn't necessarily a hero. Cassian though, is following a doomed character before his most interesting and important mission. If it turns out to be something interesting I'd be very pleased, but just like with Solo and Rouge One, it just doesn't seem to be doing anything but remixing tropes. Cassian's show is going backwards just like his movie did, and probably for the same reason, because coming up with new ideas is not why Disney bought this franchise.

Solo and Rouge One

Well those two did give us a decent glut of releases:

  • Scum Falcon
  • TIE Striker
  • TIE Reaper
  • U-Wing
  • T-65 update

Which is the part that matters.

It's still possible to see a legend ship become canon in those TV series, like an other YT model perhaps. Maybe the YT-2000 from de X-Wing Alliance game.

I would be shocked if we didn't. Some ships in the conversion kits felt distinctly more complete than others. If you only look at re-releases that didn't happen along side conversion kits you see a lack of new content, but then that is only a sample size of two, one of which had 5 pilots and felt fairly complete, the other only ever had 2 pilots in First Edition. If you look at every ship released so far only 1 ship is actually new (Lando's Falcon), the rest are also re-releases some have contained new content, and all have had at least 4 unique Pilots (if not more). Does anyone really expect two very iconic ships like the Rebel A-wing and the TIE Interceptor, to only have 2 uniques throughout their life?

I think FFG so far has been using the conversion kits to keep their promise about not having to buy new ships to get all of the pilots for a ship they had 1e, and so they have chosen re-releases in such a way to meet that need. Now with all of those kits released they need a new medium for that which they are probably still hashing out, hence why the re-releases chosen for Wave 3 are ones they could do without new content.

I hope this is what they do (kind of sad the Z-95 re-release didn't have pilots for both factions). Wouldn't this also benefit FFG by incentivizing players to try the second faction?

Sure. I wouldn't expect it's probable, but it is indeed possible.

E-Wing is Canon again, just not allot of info (really nothing more than a comic book cell of one as part of a private collection) on its Canon incarnation.

I'm going to guess the next wave(s) will just be on screen ships only. I'm also wondering that with so many models to print across 7 factions that some ships will get left behind and be conversion kit only. the scale of production they just took on is massive otherwise... I mean it's possible but I'm not optimistic. Not to mention store owners going "how much of this product is just gonna sit on the shelf and collect dust"

I beleave they are planning to rerelease every ship of the first edition for new players.

What's next? Re-releases mainly. Hopefully they'll sneak some new content in there like they are not doing with the TIE Striker and Scum Z95.
