What do you need from the starter?

By pitsch, in KeyForge

The starter is sold out in my area, but the decks can still be found. What do you need from the starter to play? I don't want to pay the huge price for an online copy. Let me know.

A lot of folks will say you don't need anything out of the starter. And technically, that's true. In the starter you get:

  • 2 fixed learner decks
  • 2 random "real" decks
  • tokens
  • learn-to-play guide (NOT official rules reference)

So, if you really really want FFG's cardboard tokens and Stun cards and +1 Power cards, then pick up a starter. If you have other ways to represent these things, then use those. If you want to use some fancy acrylic tokens you bought on Etsy, then do that.

I didn’t buy a starter, since the decks are invalid anyway.

Download the rules and QuickStart

6 markers to serve as keys, technically 2 red, yellow and blue.

Markers for “aember “ the main resource in the game. 25 should be ok.

Stun markers to indicate stunned creatures, get 10 or so.

+1 damage (boost) markers for when creatures get boosted by effects.

1 and 5 value damage markers

How are the decks invalid?

The two fixed ones are not tournament legal. The two unique ones are fine.

On BGG (BoardGameGeek) you have several ways to mitigate the impossibility of getting a starter deck.

Namelly different PnP (Print&Play) options and even a convenient All-in-1 Set with Tokens for Keys, Aembar, Damage, Stuns, Power, Armor and Chain tracker with Player aid on the back side.

Also take the opportunity to suggest to FFG to have same type of official All-in-1 set without decks, eventually premium components, so people who buy several decks , can also buy these All-in-1 sets (without the need of stockpiling the starter decks and boxes (and unnecessary trees coming down) just for few tokens) and let their friends enjoy simultaneously play of this great game.

not only what spaceinvader said, some of the cards are different from the ones you'd find in sealed boxes. (different amber gain, etc.)

Really, I did not notice any differences according to the cards on aembertree, cards I have, cards I have seen, etc.

Which ones?

EDIT: Googled it, nevermind. I never noticed.

Only in the fixed starter decks. The unique decks in the starter don't have this issue.
