Thanks for the heads up! I've already told 3 people haha
At that price, a second might not be so absurd... If only Christmas wasn't already so expensive this year...
And nine hours later the cheap core sets are gone. Currently $79.96.
Told as many people as I could.
Dear FFG:
Step 1: Release cheaper coreset
Step 2: Rack in more players
Step 3: Rejoicing of nerddom across dank folding tables and rusty metal chairs everywhere

But what's the value of a second core? Very few people have any desire to run a third Victory or a third Nebulon, and there aren't any good generic upgrades in the Core that are needed. That many excess TIEs and X-Wings also seem pretty useless. The only real value of a second Core would be a third CR90 for anyone looking to swarm them and a back-up damage deck, objective deck, and set of obstacles as a "just-in-case" replacement pool. Even at $50, that's a pretty steep price tag for what you're getting.
If Armada is not dead, I actually hope FFG somehow makes a new Core Set for the game that is more appealing and an easier entry point for new players. As it stands, the Armada Core Set is a bad value for the money, which is unfortunate since most game systems make their core sets and introductory boxes the best Value-Per-Dollar thing you can buy in the entire system, to entice new players.

I bought a second hand core from someone just for those items. There were a few other ships and OP stuff included as well. I was able to sell off most of the rest and make almost all my original cost back. Even at $50 selling off the ships in a core isn't going to get you more than about $20 so I see your point from that point of view.
That said having a second core is nice for inviting friends to play or hosting demo's. It gives you a set of stuff you don't mind so much if it gets a little beat up.
I have had friends lose their Damage Deck or an Objective card and it is a pain to replace them, now I have a little insurance against that although knock on wood I havn't lost anything yet.
Walmart has them for $46 right now.
