Free Techniques vs Titles requirements

By Zieche, in Rules Questions

I'd assume techniques you get as part of your school starting package can't be counted towards the requirements of titles, (since XP wasn't spent), but is this stated one way or the other anywhere?

For example, a Yogo starts with Shallow Waters, so if they become a Yoriki, can they buy it or count it?

I think you can only count xp you actually spend after having started the title curriculum. If you had a technique in that curriculum beforehand, too bad (and good for you too).

That's kinda where I was heading. Thanks for the second opinion!

I believe you only count an item on your curriculum once as well.

For example:

If you had Shallow Waters on your title curriculum and your current rank curriculum you would have to pick which curriculum to apply the xp gain to.

It can't apply to more than one.

I think only ones you pick up after acquiring count; it's explicit that you can't count any given spend on both school and title. (p305).

So, if, for example, yu've got Trade skills on your current school rank and as an emerald magistrate... when you buy a rank of Survival, it counts either as title or as school, not both. And the 2 ranks you had from Character Gen don't count towards either title. (whcih can make high-rank characters have a hard time finding things to actually spend upon.

They can still spend xp on anything they want and allocate half the value to the Title, in the worst case. This becomes harder once all their rings are at 5, but at that point they should be ripe for retirement ;)

Quite true... Tho' it's only 180-200 to max out the rings. Won't quite get you through 5th rank, due to the halving.

Actually, doing the math with the halving... assuming no skill raises... and requiring training before going up so excess is lost at each rank 20/24/32/44/60

Free: 3@2, 2@1
R1: 2@1→2 = 12, 6 towards rank
R1: 3@2→3 = 27, 15 towards rank, total 21 — rank-up
R2: 2@2→3 = 18, 10 towards rank, total 10
R2: 3@3→4 = 36, 18 towards rank, total 28 — rank up
R3: 2@3→4 = 24, 12 towards rank, total 12
R3: 3@4→5 = 45, 24 towards rank, total 36 — rank-up
R4: 2@4→5 = 30, 16 towards rank, total 16

About Rank 4.4...

It's cheaper than I felt. Helps to do the math. Add a few techniques, instead, and it goes up to middle of rank 5 for capping out attributes.
