Emergency deployment timing?

By LeiserLers, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Moralo Eval (iniative 4) in his YV-666 is destroyed by Garven Dreis (iniative 4, first player). Moralo has both Deadmans Switch and Natashan Pup. What is the timing?

1. Moralo attacks.

2. Deadmans Switch goes off.

3. Pup emergency deploys.

4. Pup attacks (at iniative 4).

The big questions are:

Can Pup take damage from the Deadmans Switch? Which happens first: emergency deployment or DMS?

Can Pup attack at iniative 4? I’d say yes, because it deploys before it’s mother ship is removed, and thus in the window for iniative 4 attacks.

If a carrier ship is destroyed, before the carrier is removed from the play area, any docked ships can emeRgency dePloy from their carrier. A docked ship performs an emergency deploy similar to deploying, as described above, except the ship first suffers 1 [crit] damage and after executing the maneuver, does not have the opportunity to perform an action.

• If the docked ship attempts to emergency deploy and must partially execute the maneuver but cannot be placed without overlapping another ship, the ship fails to deploy and is destroyed.

• If a ship emergency deploys during the Engagement Phase, it can still engage during that phase at its initiative. If its initiative has already occurred this round, it cannot engage this phase.

I'm not totally sure on this, but my read is that the Deadman's Switch timing window (after you are destroyed) would happen after emergency deployment (before you are removed from the board), so if the Pup doesn't dial in a fast enough maneuver it will take damage from Deadman's Switch.

I am much more sure that your Moralo Pup will not get a shot on the turn it deploys, because the trigger that allows it to deploy (removing the destroyed ship) necessarily means that the opportunity to engage at Initiative 4 has passed. So no double tap; Moralo only gets to shoot from the Hound's Tooth that turn.

Pup deploy.

Deadman trigger.

Too late for pup to enrage at I4.

Deadman's Switch:

I think it can be resolved in either order.

  • If an effect triggers after a ship is destroyed, the effect resolves immediately before the ship is removed. (Destroying Ships, p. 9)
    • This governs when DMS will happen.
  • If a carrier ship is destroyed, before the carrier is removed from the play area, any docked ships can Emergency Deploy from their carrier. (Dock, p. 10)
  • As the controller of both effects with the same trigger-- before the ship is removed --I think the controlling player should be able to resolve them in either order. As we all know, "immediately" in X-Wing is essentially a meaningless term.

Attacks:

With the Pup, the Pup can attack if the Hound didn't. If the Hound is destroyed before it's initiative, the Pup will attack. If the Hound is destroyed after it's initiative step, of course the Pup can't attack. When it all happens at the same initiative, the Hound attacks via simultaneous attacks, and the Pup can't, since it isn't deployed until after the initiative step is over.
