Hey all!

So, I’m typically the only woman at any event I go to, as far down as Las Vegas and as far North as Seattle. What I want to know is, how many of us are there? Someone at the Red Castle Regionals told me about another woman who plays in the Seattle area, but just not in tournaments. My fellow gamers who go to GenCon and other major events tell me they don’t see any women in the miniature game events.

If you are a woman in the Armada community, or game with one who isn’t active on the forum, give a shout here. I think it would be good to raise the visibility of women in the hobby.

So, shout out here to any women in your local mini game or FFG game community.

She's active on the forum, but I'd be remiss not to give props to @duck_bird. One of the fastest learning players I've ever seen. Save one of our two matches at the NOVA Open, she's consistently had my number of late. Out of our last, I wanna say six? seven? games, that final round at NOVA was literally my only win against her.

@Angry Ewok's wife plays in the north Georgia/Carolina region. I don't know if she is in the forums though.

My wife plays a few of FFGs miniatures games with me including Armada, though I haven't convinced her to be in a tournament yet.

My wife has played, but only occasionally.

At worlds 2 years ago there was 2. Didn't see either of them last year.

There was a woman playing at UK nationals this year (out of 40-50). Was there with her significant other (and placed one below him), and did fairly well. Not sure if either is on the forum.

I wonder if FFG has done any research on this subject - or any similar companies. The card games seem to have a reasonable balance, but the miniatures games don't seem anywhere close.

My wife was one of those two. Unfortunately, ffg's ticket lottery didn't give her a ticket for the last worlds, so we didn't go. I preferred the old method, since it required immediate buying of the ticket, so less of them got wasted. When the round of time released tickets came up, it was too short to make airline and hotel plans.

It used to be that my wife would play X-Wing, but not armada, that was where the line was drawn. She has, however, expressed interest recently in trying armada, so I'm hoping to have a woman playing soon. Any tips for intro games will be appreciated, I probably only have one shot at this.

Depends on the personality.

If she’s easily discouraged and you’re winning, try not to beat her too substantially. If you do she might think the learning curve is too steep and won’t attempt to learn it.

I am, generally, in no danger of winning a game of armada lol

I played her even...She beat me when I got super aggressive with my Demo...and just missed being out of front arc by a hair....then it died lol.

My question is why are their so few?

Can't be that women don't enjoy playing games, because I know a lot that do...

Can't be that women don't have the skills for something like armada, cause I know a lot that do...

Can't be that women don't like star wars cause I know a lot that do.

Likewise, for the reasons most armada players would say they like the game, you don't find any reasons that would be biased based on sex...

Not sure what it is and I don't have any theory behind the reason it's this way. Kind of perplexing when you think about it.
If I had to guess though it would likely be some sort of social programming during gen x and previous that divides the sexes more distinctly so that there is very little overlap. Along those lines then it may be that women are taught to favor status highly(nerds being the bottom off the totem pole the last fifty or so years), and so to be seen with nerds, let alone identify as one is tantamount to social suicide in the female mind.

Or perhaps it's the one on one confrontational nature of armada that females dislike... I work in a casino, amongst slot players I'd say there is an even split amongst the sexes, if anything it's more female. At table games it's perhaps 80/20 in favor of males.. At poker it's like 98-99 percent dudes...remember at poker it's patron vs patron, not patron versus house... That dynamic changes things a lot, the intimidation factor goes way up...typically females are brought to poker by a male..the rarest of birds is the female that shows up on her own volition. One could easily view game stores that way...Lord knows there are a lot of armada owners who are loathe to show up to the store to play because they feel the same sort of intimidation factor, this before sex even gets involved.

Whatever the reason is, I'm not sure that this trend is reversing any time soon. Which sucks cause if this game needs anything it's more players, male and female!

i think the disparity of men in the game vs women and NB people is someth8ng that should get better.

im thinking of how to propose to FFG that they do some sort of women’s invitational event or something, maybe at worlds, kind of like the WSOP’s lady’s event.

Ask her what she’d think of playing a women/nb only tournament. I’d be curious to know her response.

@Truthiness is too kind. I'm a dork and I play Armada in the Nova area.

I personally would not be interested in a women's tournament, but I support the idea.

@SkyCake I'm not gonna write a ton, but yeah I think that's pretty accurate. When I was little being into games and computers was very much a boy's thing. ****, girls being really into competitive sports was pretty new. Crushing nerds in quake didn't make me cool with the popular girls, that's for sure.

That said, the Armada community is super chill. Like you said, I personally dislike actual conflict. But I'm also very competitive in games. I want to pay against good players and get better and then crush them next time or get crushed if I'm not up to it. Armada is great because it is a very competitive game, but no one has freak out and flips the table over.

my wife got pulled into tabletop through 40k. She is big into Black Library books and likes the background, but is a pretty good 40k player. We used to travel around and play. She likes armada ok but Legion has her attention more. With the twins taking our time up we both sorta picked our 1 game and stick to it. Not many of the all weekend, multi system table top tournament trips going on any more. :-(

We have one woman in our local Armada group. I think she may have already posted here but I don't know many of our players forum handles. She participated in a couple store championships and another more casual tournament.

In my 3+ years of public gaming, I've seen maybe 2 female players for Armada and 2 or 3 that played X Wing regionally.

I get the hesitation factor. Game shops are filled with some odd ducks sometimes. Even as a guy I get awkward feelings from some patrons. Nevermind what other factors women face.
