Boba Fett Crew - do you have to roll for damage if you setup on an obstacle?

By Zensyntax, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Per the title, if you setup at range 0 of a rock with a ship carrying Boba, when that ship activates does it immediately have to roll for an obstacle? Or does overlap / maneuver not take place because it occurred in the Setup?

Basically, does the ship using Boba crew always have to roll for an obstacle?

Related question, does the ship using Boba crew get an action on its first activation if it is treated as overlapping an obstacle, or if you have Boba crew are you giving up that action by starting on a rock?

Here is the text for Boba crew:

At the end of Setup, place yourself at range 0 of an obstacle and beyond range 3 of any enemy ship.

Thanks!

You do not have to roll for the obstacle.

Short answer: no (thanks @Maui.)

Referring to p.12 of the Rules Reference (v1.0.2) there's a list of effects that you receive while maneuvering through an obstacle, a separate very similar list for while moving but not maneuvering, and a third list for while at range zero. This third list is all that's relevant during setup and has only a single item:

Asteroid: The ship cannot perform attacks.

For your related question the answer is "not necessarily." Your starting position is not considered part of the maneuver/movement. As long as you set up with your front template guides clear of the obstacle you will be able to execute your first maneuver without overlapping, and thus avoid rolling for damage.

@Zensyntax Boba crew opens up some very interesting strategies, have fun!
