I wanna begin playing x wing but only casually, my intentions are to have de basic game and a millenium falcon plus one slave I

Should i wait to get it in the second edition or i must buy the firt one and settle with it?

And how important is the dependence of the app , I can play without it?

First, Welcome! X-wing is a very enjoyable game. If you're like therest of us, you'll find X-wing is very addicting. You probably won't be satisfied with 4 or 5 ships. That said, I'd get the 2e versions of the ships.

You can get by without using the official app. FFG provides a pdf of the points value of the ships and upgrades. You can build your squads that way. Or you can use 3rd party apps like yet another squad builder 2.0. Easier to use.

Whichever way you decide to go, enjoy the game. You don't have to enter the competitive arena to have fun.

Again, welcome to a very good game.

Seconded what Stone said. You can enjoy the game casualy without getting all over the place with ships...

First edition is a massively enjoyable game (as is Second!), but the logistics of the expansions are not all that friendly to newcomers. Whereas you can "brownbag" (fly straight from the pack) almost every piece in second edition to have loads of fun, there are a lot of upgrades that are neither exciting nor fun straight from the box in first edition that need even more expansions to actually become fun. In many cases in first edition, you might be tempted into buying a ship in a faction you don't expect to field just for a few upgrades that work very well on your favorite ship. An even stronger case for second edition is the introduction of cool cards in the core and every expansion called "Quickbuilds". Whereas you can be lost not knowing how a certain piece is designed as you experiment in first edition in building a ship, the Quickbuilds in second edition are suggested builds that highlight certain aspects of the ships and upgrades and are an excellent springboard for a newcomer to build one's own squads. Quickbuilds are also very friendly to those with small collections or not wanting to squadbuild with an app or a web browser, as they also bear information on their power level so that you can combine some Quickbuild ships for a certain "Threat Level", which both players interpret as their force strength. A final case for second edition is that the game and its language is more streamlined, avoiding many confusing rule interactions or clarifications needed.

Both editions are rabbit holes of fun to enter, but I cannot stress how much friendlier second edition is to newcomers. Anecdotal cases in point: some newcomers have entered the playgroups I partake in, stating the simplicity of entering a miniatures game as a large draw. They held off for a few months in waiting for second edition to drop because they were daunted by ship availability, cross-faction purchases, errata, rule interactions, etc. offered by first edition.

welcome indeed!

if you want to play 2.0 the app is unfortunatley unavoidable to some degree

the pdf is a nightmare to navigate and changes every few months, and the app itself seems worse. I have found that it is so tedious to play without a squad builder now that im not even interested in the game most times, so its important to know that going in.

so far as i can tell YASB 2.0 is the best option now, but it still makes using a computer a requirement to play. YASB stands for Yet Another Squad Builder, and both first and second edition X-wing have versions online.

its free and easy to use, just pick your faction, then your ships and upgrades.

you can also use it to see what ships can equip or build a list using a ship you dont own, which might help you choose what to buy.

happy hunting!

I'd just say that I personally disagree, and don't really have any trouble with the PDFs. Not saying anyone's wrong if they don't like them; just making a counter-point that it's a matter of personal preference and not a universal difficulty.

Though, I will point out that whether you use an app or the PDFs or what have you, it's only necessary for building your list. During gameplay, you never need to reference any app or list at all, so long as you have the cards for that list in front of you.

Or play quick builds. I’ve had a ton of fun when I played quick build format. :)

But as far as point based games go, yasb 2.0 is awesome. Launch bay next app for iOS is pretty solid too. I don’t really dislike building squads. If anything, I dislike not having enough time to go back and get them all tried out.

Yeaaaah I’ll even go ahead and point out that while the majority of those who are most vocal around here actively hate the official app—and it does have its problems, don’t get me wrong—I’ve never had serious trouble with it. I managed to lose a couple saved squads here or there, but it is functional, and I’ve had few complaints, even if it is clunky.

2.0 is pretty great, the game is more balanced, and you can certainly start small. I will say: the only Millenium Falcon available for 2.0 (without finding part of a conversion kit from someone) is Lando’s Falcon from the Solo movie. If you mean to get the classic Falcon it’s certainly not impossible, just a touch more effort than picking it up from a game store. As Lando’s Falcon is in the Scum faction, though, it would give you some extra stuff to fly with Boba. (Take that as you will, obviously Han And Boba thematically should fight against each other rather than as buddies 😜 )

Oh I disagree. Head canon says they both worked for Jabba long enough that before Han got on Jabba’s blacklist, they’d have been on friendly terms.

(Just before Han is lowered into the carbonite chamber)

Boba Fett: Solo, this may be a bad time to ask, but were you planning on finishing those Mountain Dews you left in the break room fridge? Because if you're going to be frozen in carbonite...

Han: <rolls eyes> Sure, you can have them.

Boba Fett: Sa-weet! Thanks, man! You're the best!

Well first off , where do you plan on starting or have you already started?

If you already have a bunch of expansions kits and the core from 1st edition, nothing wrong with playing old school X-wing. The same principles in 2nd edition applies to 1st edition. You lay down templates, move ship and do action, roll red and green dice. Making the change over from 1st edition to 2nd edition shouldn't be too difficult in a casual setting.

If you don't have anything yet then it is probably best to start with 2nd edition core. They don't have points on the cards like in 1st edition but all expansions come with quick build cards for a casual format.

If you want to get started and get your head around the game, quick builds are a good place to start. They offer some interesting games without needing to learn a million options.

Once you're used to what the various upgrades and pilots do, then switch to points and 'mix and match' to find a combination you really like.

Besides which, the quick builds often 'break the rules' to allow stuff you can't do with points for extra thematic lists - one Quick Build Falcon is literally the "death star escape" from episode IV, carrying everyone who was on the ship at the time on screen, despite that being far more crew/gunners than a falcon normally has slots for. And yes, it's bloody terrifying in a game.

In the Legendsverse at least, Boba (who has done the occasional job for Jabba since the Clone Wars) dislikes Han somewhat even before ANH. He does warn Han that Greedo's after him though, and tells him that Jabba's sent Greedo after him just as a hint to pay up "If Jabba really wanted you dead, you know who he'd hire."
