Hoarybat's Repainting Log

By hoarybat, in X-Wing Painting and Modification

I took a shot at a minor modification to the HWK-290. I call it the "Moldier Crow". Winglets from a broken Quadjumper, and a much larger turret from a broken YT-2400.

Here's a detail shot of the underside from a potential paint scheme I rejected:

I painted this guy with TurboDork metallics. I have very, very mixed feelings about those paints.

Love the mod. I know it's your ship, but I'd love to see this in black!

By the way the YT-2400 guns are massive, yikes! Very intimidating. Love it!

I could totally see this ship in dark grey / black "crow" livery.

Thanks a ton for the support. I'm really profoundly bad at this game, and get my jollies off of painting.

Download the Fly Casual simulator to get some easy reps in. It is great learning tool! Use the top down view, it's less fiddly.

Heck yes. Already doing that. I'm going to be setting up Vassal to get some real reps in too. I play 2-4 games/week with my local squadron (Go Capital Corsairs!). I just suck. 🙂

I worked up Kavil's Y-Wing in preparation for having his points drop. Ha. That was overly optimistic. Still had fun with this one. Added a chin turret from a Decimator, and a couple of guns from a Star Viper. This is a sloppy paintjob, but the colors are striking and "evil."

You shouldn't be surprised. When something looks good you have get it out there!

I'm working on a mod and repaint of an Aggressor for a close friend.

I love the look of the stock Aggressor -- it's so weird and "alien" looking, and it reminds me a lot of a Belostomatid (predacious water bug -- pretty nasty little buggers):

In order to give the Aggressor a bit more of an insectoid feel, I added another pair of "legs". I spent a lot of time trying to decide how they should be posed -- either out front (for capture) or behind (for speed/travel). My wife and daughter convinced me to keep the legs posed for capture out front, and so I got everything drilled, glued, and pinned in place.

The final result sort of reminds me of an orbweaver sitting in its web waiting for prey:

Anyway, here are the WIP shots:

Airbrushing done -- lots of cleanup and detailing still to come.

Gross! 😍 💗

(but seriously, I can't wait to see more!!)

Progress continues:

I've started the highlighting, and am getting there on the canopy.

I'm going to have to freehand retouch the rear right "leg," since the green masking tape stripped the pattern.

The front left "leg" has snapped a couple of times, and I've attempted to repair it with superglue and plastic cement. I'll probably need to reinforce it with a brace underneath.

Maybe it's too late, but did you consider magnetizing the legs for easier storage?

I had planned to magnetize the arms to pose them in different positions on my pair, but I would just get more confused about which way is front than I already am.

Argh, it's too late but that would have been a heck of a good idea. Everything is drilled and pinned.

All done (except for another coat of gloss on the canopy).

... I loved how my Kavil turned out, so I decided to repeat the scheme but *bigger* and *weirder* for this ship.

Again, I'm happy with my design choices, and frustrated by my execution.

... I'm looking into some 1:1 classes with a teacher to help me work on execution.

This is beautiful.
