RAC is a beast..

By Scaritus, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I’ve been flying this to some success and absolutely love it

(88) Rear Admiral Chiraneau
(7) Minister Tua
(14) Darth Vader
(2) BT-1
(2) Hull Upgrade
(4) Lone Wolf
(9) Proton Torpedoes
Points 126

(36) Captain Jonus
(6) Barrage Rockets
(12) Fifth Brother
(6) Shield Upgrade
(6) Saturation Salvo
Points 66

Total points: 192

Fifth brother on Jonus worked really well. Only change would be dropping Saturation Salvo, but it did do a job. I’ve tried it with prix mines on RAC too.

I don’t see why the Deci is not seeing much play?

While built solidly on paper, I strongly believe this is way too heavily loaded. Generally, ships > upgrades in 2.0.

RAC is fantastic with JUST Tua, maybe with a coordinator support for until she begins to proc. That leaves LOTS of room for more ships. Jonus too, Barrage Rockets alone are plenty.

To that end...

  • RAC (Trick Shot, Minister Maketh Tua) 96
  • Captain Jonus (Ruthless, Barrage Rockets) 43
    • I figure there will be a lot of the time it'll be worth the damage on RAC to ensure that Jonus has max hits.
  • A Punisher:
    • Redline (Advanced Sensors, Proton Torpedoes) 61
    • Deathrain (Trajectory Simulator, Barrage Rockets, Seismic Charges, Proton Bombs) 59 + Hull Upgrade (for RAC) 2
      • I figure Deathrain's Barrage Rockets can benefit a bunch from Jonus' pilot ability. Meanwhile, Trajectory can mash up Swarms which might otherwise be more of a threat to low-agility ships like RAC.

Bad first impressions. Turret ships lost easy access to the Boost action, lost full out-of-arc firing, and are still rather expensive. Doesn't mean they don't work, but bad first impressions can be tricky to overcome.

It's not just a first impressions thing, it's simply not good enough. And then the Deci mainly wants to be doing it's big fast orbitting moves with a locked side arc, but you're stressing with Tua and stuck doing slow banks, which means you're getting arc-dodged.

Fat turrets are in a bad spot. The Deci is probably the worst of the fat turrets. RAC is probably the worst of the Deci pilots.

Pretty much agree. I've seen the deci do decent against low ship count squads and I've had a lot of fun with captain O packing sloane vader + 4 ties. But if it runs into anything more than 3 primary-3 attack ships its going down pretty hard. And in this edition thats the floor of expectation.

I mean I like the idea of a fat RAC and I have a build I've yet to fly that is similar to the OPs but with mines and a different wingman. In theory it has dice mods for days and 3 arcs.. but its still just a single attack ship and gets burned down too quick when caught in a crossfire.

I suggest you put a build on the table. It’s way more powerful than on paper. The fat build is the way to go. Keep it light and it’s damage output is not reliable enough.

Torps give you 3 arcs effectively. This works well for Vader, but just having that force point is excellent, negates the stress to some degree of you can’t shift it.

i flown this list a fair few times across Vassal and tabletop. Jonus is perhaps not optimal but a personal choice. RAC however is a damage output Animal, and can negate a surprising amount of damage too.

i don’t cry about what it’s lost since 1.0 as I never flew turrets. A boost would be nice but it’s not essential at all. You need to know you will likely take lots of damage, it’s just managing the damage race

I've flown the deci exactly once and it was pretty fun.

Heres one of the fat lists I was brewing with. Its been awhile since I brewed this but iirc the general idea was to bait with echo down one flank and run the deci down the other pincer style.

RAC does reinforce as default. Pilot ability + LW to modify reds. Grand Inq for flexibility.. to adjust turret/focus or TL with TL initially to turn on protorps for 3 arc vader and mines from the rear. If the deci wasn't so **** expensive the phantom would be rex instead.

Rear Admiral Chiraneau — VT-49 Decimator 88
Lone Wolf 4
Proton Torpedoes 9
Darth Vader 14
Grand Inquisitor 16
Proximity Mines 6

“Echo” — TIE/ph Phantom 50
Juke 4
Fire-Control System 3
Director Krennic 5

Total- 199

Anyway I quit on echo which should maybe have a different loadout. And its just never climbed high enough on my list of stuff to fly yet.

I like the idea of Grand Inq on RAC. I’ll have to give that a try!

I flew echo alongside a few times, but kept losing her. Whisper is obviously the stronger pick I think, but I just enjoy Echo more. Adv Sens is my personal favourite but not a popular choice.

Maybe this?

If you weren’t fussed about the bit 0-0-0 on either of them at the extra 3 pts

Torpedo arc does not help Vader. Per the Rules Reference, only printed arcs, as well as mobile arcs (whether innate, or from turret upgrades) count as firing arcs on a ship.
