Poe + Pattern Analyzer

By Rettere, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Can Poe take two actions off of Pattern Analyzer when he does a red maneuver, resulting in two stress (one from the maneuver and one from his ability).

Or more generally, can ships with linked actions take a white action then link into a red action during the pattern analyzer pre-stress window? Still resulting in 2 stress?

Yes.

Pattern Analyzer: "While you fully execute a red maneuver, before the Check Difficulty step, you may perform 1 action."

Reads as a no to me with the "you may perform 1 action" being a hard limit.

Never mind. Read post below this one. Double stress as OP believes. :)

Yes a ship may perform a linked action with Pattern Analyzer

It's the same language the rules reference uses to describe the perform action step, yet people are allowed to take linked actions there.

Quote

Each ship activates by resolving the following steps in order:

  1. Reveal Dial: The ship’s assigned dial is revealed by flipping it faceup and then placing it next to its ship card.
  2. Execute Maneuver: The ship executes the maneuver selected on the revealed dial.
  3. Perform Action: The ship may perform one action .

Saying that a ship may perform 1 action is not the same as saying it cannot perform more than 1 action.

Cleaning it up a bit to hopefully avoid confusion.

We have an example in Advanced Sensors of an action count limit within a window and we don't see that in PA.

Okay. Same language, same result. I should have rechecked how the perform action step was worded. :)

Ok how about this one:

Poe + Black One + Static Discharge Vanes.

Can Poe:

1. SLAM

2. Take a second action using his ability (After you perform an action...)

3. Gain an ion using Black One (After you perform a SLAM action...)

4. Swap the ion for a stress using Static Discharge vanes

Ending with 2 stress and a guaranteed ion on a neighboring ship?

Really I guess it is a question if I can 'queue' both Items 2 and 3 as 'after the SLAM action', or if I need to gain my ion token first, then trigger Poe's ability.

My read says no.

You've got the correct order in which things happen (SLAM, Poe's action, Black One's Ion-swap, then maybe SDV), but Static Discharge Vanes requires you to be unstressed in order to activate. However, at this point Poe is stressed from having performed a white action treated as red. It doesn't work for the same reason Jake Farrel can't use his Red boost to gain a Focus action for himself: you'll be stressed before you attempt to trigger an effect which relies upon being unstressed.

Ah OK, so I can nest actions like that but I just forgot that SDV requires me not to be stressed.

I asked this question on reddit. Static Discharge Vanes happens before you would gain an ion token. This is a replacement effect and you never gain the ion token. Therefore you also do not lose the disarm token since gaining an ion token was the requirement.

Errata (since rules reference 1.0.2): Changed from "If you would gain an ion or jam token, if you are not stressed, you may choose a ship at range 0-1. If you do, gain 1 stress token and transfer 1 ion or jam token to that ship."
