Why not Phasma?

By Rokian, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Show me your best builds with phasma!( Petty officer is nice but a better pilot than as a crew, or .... i haven´´ t seen your build yet )

Here goes one that i have created with her:

*(60) Petty officer Thanisson

-(5) Phasma

-(5) informant

-(3) FCS

-(1) Biohexacrypt codes

*(41) Backdraft

-(3) FCS

-(10) Special Forces Gunner

Phasma and Thannison is in theory a nice pairing - at the end of the engagement phase a ship in your arc takes a stress plus tractor token - but my main issue is that if someone is at range 1 within an upsilon's arc of fire, it's far more pressing problem is that it tends not to be there after the shuttle engages.

That said, the two don't have to interact. Thannison is a good general discouragement from anyone in your arc of fire pulling linked actions or similar effects (Scum Han Solo Gunner or Scorch) because taking a 4-dice shot back with -1 agility is no small beer. Meanwhile, Phasma is just good general-purpose annoyance if you're throwing your Upsilon into the fight front-and-centre.

Informant....I'm not sure is so useful. It's there to let you plan out in advance where a key opponent is going. TIE/fo, however, don't have anything linked to barrel roll, and you don't really want to spend the shuttle's action on co-ordinate if you can avoid it when you're throwing it into the middle of the fight (which Thanisson and Phasma, rather than, say, Stridan and a cannon, encourage). Yes, it'll let you know which side Backdraft wants his turret but that much you could probably have guessed.

Fire Control...I'd avoid. The point of Fire Control System is to allow you to avoid spending your target lock turn after turn as you chase the same target. Upsilons can't do that , because the best they can do continuously is a hard 2 turn and they lack boost or barrel roll; that's not bad for a big ship (you're a frakking dogfighter compared to the Lambda) but because you don't have a turret it means you have to take whatever shots you get on whatever targets present themselves; you're better off throwing that target lock in for a full reroll (with 4 dice you're likely to have more than one die you'd like to reroll) than holding on to it in the hopes of still having arc on the same target next turn.

That goes double with Biohexacrypt Codes. You rarely want to spend an action on your 4-dice-primary battleship to add an action to your lighter fighters, but the time may come when you do - if the former is facing the wrong way, and a barrel roll will get "Scorch" a range 1 attack on a crippled opponent, go for it!.....oh......he's at range 3. Bugger. Biohexacrypt codes let you put a lock on, say, Backdraft, on turn one, and keep it there until that one time you really want to co-ordinate the Special Forces TIE and the annoying pilot is juuuuust outside range 2. Doing that, though, means not having access to target lock as an offensive option - which means Fire Control System is further reduced in value.

By comparison, Backdraft and the Zeta Squadron varsity, "Scorch" and "Longshot", are simple and effective. Backdraft might be a touch fragile - the fewer turns you expect him to live, the less value you get out of Fire Control System - but if Fire Control System and/or Co-Ordinate lets him evade as his action, he can be on a par with a T-70 for durability.

Essentially, were it me, I'd dump off Informant and Fire Control System. I'm not sure what I'd replace them with. Thannison is a good pilot, and can be useful - remember the Petty Officer triggers on any ship gaining stress - so theoretically you can use the ability to barrel roll or boost "Scorch" after Zeta Leader gains a stress token, if the benefit from the reposition outweighs the risk of reduced agility. Maybe proton rockets for Backdraft, or a cannon for the Upsilon (a heavy laser cannon is unlikely to get a shot but the intimidation factor of a 5-dice big stick is going to be impressive for just 4 points....an ion cannon is a more practical option - and a useful one - for just a point more).

If sending the shuttle forwards, Pattern Analyser would probably be an early pick for me; that lets you pull one of the (many) red moves and still get an action, and it's pretty cheap.

  • Petty Officer Thannison
    • Captain Phasma
    • Biohexacrypt Codes
    • Pattern Analyser
    • Hull Upgrade
  • "Backdraft"
    • Fire Control System
    • Special Forces Gunner
  • "Scorch"
    • Fanatical
  • "Longshot"
    • Fanatical

Nice idea , the fcs on Petty was to be action cheap for Biohexacrypt, i would use lock , come close to the enemy , shot (use fcs if needed ), and since i can´ t fellow the enemy so well i would spend the target to give Jam token to the enemy (cripple him a lot with 3 tokens types kkk) , a nice trick , but , yhea , dont know if the FCS would be useful since i activate first , so i would have chance of using jam before the enemy moves (thanisson is ps 2 only).... I will check something better for the informant and, nice use of pattern analyser, it is a good upgrade!
