Sprucing up the combat encounters

By Samuel Richard, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I'm not getting sick of the standard stormtroopers or even the grunts of the imperial army however I have been trying to stat out new archetypes for my players to face besides the tough guy, officer, and grunts. I currently have a sniper, a Flamer, and a shield defender statted out and was wondering if ya'll had any unique ideas. Not strictly imperial because mercenaries but I'm curious.

Isn't sprucing up combat encounters more about settings (hangars, catwalks, speeding trains) than mechanical details of the minions? I mean, there are plenty of archetypes for whatever you want, just reskin them to wear a bucket and you're done.

Check out Wookieepeida; there have been about half a bazillion variant stormtroopers and other Imperial antagonists in various media over the years.

Settings are key, fighting under different circumstances can really help to spruce things up. If you haven’t already checked out Environmental Set Pieces , do it.

Another option might be to get a hardcore nemesis (or squad of nemeses) who constantly are trying different things to get an upper hand. Examples:

  • They bring in an AT-ST for support, which can pretty much oneshot any PC. This forces them to try to outmaneuver their opponents if they wish to escape alive.
  • They use a combination of jetpacks and flamethrowers to try to force the PCs into the open.
  • They use an ambush to catch the PCs unprepared and manage to hold one PC as a hostage.
