TIE Aggressor/Starwing builds?

By sthej, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Is it just me or are both the TIE aggressors and the attack starwings too much ship for their own good? It seems like there aren't many synergistic card choices with their pilot abilities, and their bounty of slots just makes them cost more than a specialized craft (that is just as good or better at any of the specific rolls one of these may play.

Does anyone have any recommendations for builds? The best I've come up with so far is mounting an ion turret on the aggressor to be a squirrelly support craft. Maybe put Debris Gambit on it to get a potential reposition and white evade (I'm assuming I'll be able to be within range for that with the repo).

I'm not seeing much on the starwing.

This too.

That's a lot of torps 😲 . Nice, thanks.

Lt Kestal with Ruthless, Dorsal Turret and Barrage Rockets at 47pt fits nicely with a bunch of things and has a nasty bite if ignored. Just pair with unignorable things...

Most of the Aggressors are ***, but Lt Kestal is one of the Empire's secret weapons, he's vastly underrated and ignored when he can be a total killer. His ability to snipe aces through all their dice mods is unparalleled.

In this photo: Barrage Rockets vs Luke. Crit, Crit, Blank. Jonus reroll into Crit, Crit, Crit. Luke rolls 2 focus, remove them with Kestals ability. Luke takes three crits with a Direct Hit and explodes!!!

You need to run him alongside Jonus to mod your dice without spending Focus, and the fancy version is to fit 5th Brother on him for a crit mod too. I've got a squad that's Jonus/Tomax/Redline/Kestal (w/ Fifth Brother) and it'll bury a lot of lists in rockets.

It's kinda' pricey (but you could easily trim a couple upgrades off), but I like...

"Double Edge"-Debris Gambit, Munitions Failsafe, Ion Turret, Barrage Rockets, And Veteran Turret Gunner.

Ship has lots of options during engagements with almost certified damage being done. It would be a godly build if you were allowed 3 attacks in one turn, but current rules nerf this build hard. It might be viable if Aggressors ever become cheaper and range 3 turrets return...

Ive been running Vader,Redline,Vynder. Vynder been getting about 3 torps off per game coming from the flank.

9pts are left that I play around with. Adv Sensors on Redline lets him get both torps off before he dies usually. Or Adv Proton Torps + FCS on Vynder stops ships from bum rushing him getting into range 1. Basically, if you are in his arc, its trouble. I prefer Vynder build more as most people go for Redline first, and he has yet to live in any game, where as Vynder on 1 hull can slam away or become a great blocker late game for Vader, preserving more MOV. I've also wanted to try Collision Detector on Vynder, as some games had an asteroid right where Vynder wanted to slam and fire torps. A few games it would have come in real handy. The only game I have lost with this list, adv 4lom was blocking Vynders blue moves and the only way I could escape was a blue 2 bank to the right over an asteroid, and with collision detector I could have slammed away afterwards. Stupid 4Lom.

This is the Kestal build I’m playing a league with. It helps keep aggro away from Jonus.

On Kestal, what do you think of proton rockets instead of barrage rockets? They require the focus anyway, meaning you can get them off without a two turn setup, barrage rockets are best in bullseye (similar to prockets req), and you get a 5 shot. Pair with Jonus for rerolls, marksmanship for crit, and his native ability to cancel non-evades for a ship melting round?

Tack on munitions failsafe to make sure it lands nicely.

prockets require the enemy ship to be in bullseye to even fire them. Easier said than done. If it was easy, everyone would be doing it. Stick to barrage

I flew a version of polmoney's /SOTL's squad tonight-Jonus, Kestal, Cutlass, and Vermeil. It was quite effective. Gotta say, MVP goes to Jonus. Yikes, that ability! But Kestal pulled his weight. Thanks for the tips!

Thanks!

I keep thinking about a filler Starwing: Nu Squadron Pilot (Proton Torpedoes, Fire Control System, Advanced SLAM, OS-1), for 50 points.

The kind of thing that, if ignored, can get to a flank/side, and just churn out a bunch of Torpedoes. I wonder if it'd do OK in a Squad like:

  • Whisper (Juke, Vader) 70
    • Standard build Whisper.
  • Redline (Proton Torpedoes, Advanced Sensors) 61
    • Standard build Redline
  • Nu Squadron Pilot (Proton Torpedoes, Fire Control System, Advanced SLAM, OS-1) 50
  • Total 181, monster bid 19.

The Nu could easily get upgraded to Rho or Vynder, but there aren't any super impressive Talents for them (Outmaneuver? That's kinda scary, but it kind of defeats the purpose of going for a cheapie filler Starwing).

I kind of have this feeling about Starwings. They're not so much Jumpmasters (nerfed into oblivion), but not quite Palpatine (deceptively decent). They're kinda like the E-Wings of the Empire. They cost a lot for what they bring, they're kind of outclassed by cheaper ships like TIE Bombers or X-Wings. Not cost-effective, but still kinda functional.

Does the Empire have anyway to feed low Init OS-1s Locks?

I mean, Jendon, but not exactly my point.

1e Starwings could just fly at something, and had the tail end of the edition handed to them almost on a silver platter.

Now, they've got to be flown differently, but I still think they've got legs. If your opponent chases, they can run like nothing else. If your opponent lets you flank, you've got repeatable heavy firepower from a great flanker/chaser. If your opponent turns into it at the right time, you've opened space for your other ships. Starwing might even survive, too; they're kinda the middle line between tanky and fragile. To be sure, I need to fly them a bit more, but I think they're a sleeper "functional ship." Not meta-breaking or such, maybe not a ship you run a full squad of, but they've got a role.

Just reporting back. I flew this last week:

(2) Fire-Control System
(4) Ion Missiles

Vynder is just awesome! Super hard to damage/pin down, and really likes to hurt things. Thanks for the recommendations on using him.
