Charge action

By Avatar111, in Rules Questions

For all the people who were in the beta, why was the Charge action removed?

I understand it was too fast as it was one range band for each bonus success (now the new Maneuvre action is one range band per 2 bonus successes),

But why was the 2 opportunity (if you succeed, deal physical dmg equal to one of your readied weapon base dmg) was removed?

And, can something similar be added back to the Maneuvre action or its a no-no ? I simply feel that without using water stance, only moving on range band if you want to deal dmg is very slow pace for the setting.

edit: right now the "charge" action is basically water stance, 1 free move, use maneuvre to move, and strike (and hopefully if needed) get 2 opportunities for extra range bands if you need the extra range. so i guess it is fine. it makes the charge action very ring specific though.

To be honest, having taken part in the beta is no guarantee to understand what did or did not make it to the last cut ;)

Some changes came as a surprise too... on this one, I’m not sure, but your guess could be correct with regards to making charge a Water themed option. In past editions, Water was the ring of movement, so maybe there’s a bit of that too...

It was never explained. I don't recall anyone asking for it to be removed, but I didn't really miss it.

Things which might be worth noting:

  • It was a manoeuvre action but not an attack action. Which is probably wrong, given that stuff which triggers off you trying to attack someone should be triggered by a charge action. It also didn't target a specific individual which is weird as surely you'd describe the action as "I'm Charging the Ronin with the Naginata" (or whatever). As a result, it was TN2 needing ** to strike an opponent regardless of what that opponent might do to increase the TN of attacks against them (Air stance, Guard actions, whatever)
    • Equally, this (weirdly) means you didn't get any benefit to charge actions for being mounted on a Unicorn Warhorse, since it provided skilled assistance on Martial Arts (Melee) checks.
  • There was no minimum move distance. When you're already in contact with an opponent, you shouldn't be able to keep "charging" over and over again.
  • Being able to move-and-strike as an action does tread on water's unique thing by making it a unique action available to everyone in every ring

I assume it was removed because it really didn't work properly, for the reasons you mention. The bigger mystery is why it was added to the beta in that weird form in the first place.

why was it added to the beta "as is" I don't know. but would a charge action be something good for the game/pace ? as a way to potentially catch runners? (right now it is impossible) maybe.
