Purge the Wicked Mechanics

By Nheko, in Rules Questions

Can you guys clarify the benefit of this School Ability? You spend a VP and you... bypass any resistance of a tainted opponent? hit as many opponents as you can within range?

Once
per game session, you may spend 1 Void
point to wield an invocation against all the
wicked in your sight. Instead of affecting its
usual targets, the next invocation technique
you perform targets each Tainted being
in range.

So, instead of whatever your normal target limits (So, say, one target at Range 1-3) you target all Tainted creatures inside the range.

Thank you very much! Besides hitting all your tainted opponents within range Ithought I was missing something.

The Kuni are awesome, it’s just hard to pick them for a campaign unless is a Shadowlands Campaign...

Not necessarily - they're not bad as aides to an emerald magistrate since Maho-Tsukai loose in the Empire would also be tainted, and they're very gifted at both sniffing them out and stopping them once they do. They're also rather useful in that they get the comparatively rare pairing of free access to Invocations & Kata, which I think might be unique to them

Also note that a rank 6 Kuni Master doesn't have the limitation of Gaze into Shadow - that you must know for definite the target is tainted - so you can, for example, use Fury of Osano-Wo as a rather extreme version of 'Ordeal by Fire'....

Yay for the Kuni !!

Come to think of it, does Jade Strike still work against tainted humans ? The technique now only refers to Otherworldly beings... would be a shame if it did not work on Maho tsukai...

As written, no. It specifically says if you're not otherworldly, it has no effect.

Note that this is a change from the Beta - which refers to hitting targets with the Shadowlands Taint disadvantage, which would translate to a Tainted being.

I think this is probably an error, for two reasons:

  1. This means Jade Strike can be employed against a Manifest Kami (which is Otherworldly but not Tainted) but not a Maho-Tsukai (which is Tainted but not Otherworldly), given the narrative description of the attack, that makes little sense.
  2. The Jade Strike technique is accompanied by the "Conviction Of Purpose" sidebar, which basically says " You can't just fling Jade Strike at everyone you meet after saying 'hello' on the off chance they're tainted* ".
    • This implies Jade Strike is supposed to work on Tainted targets - and probably Tainted, Non-Otherworldly ones, since you are unlikely to be under much confusion whether a target is otherworldly or not, and if an otherworldly target is tainted (Oni, undead, etc) you're unlikely to be unsure about that either.

*" Hai, Hida-Ue. I am honoured by your...... JADE STRIKE! "

".... Really ?"

"What? You can't be too careful....anyway, where was I?"

In R/Rokugan a dude asked the question to Max and he answered that Jade Strike should be usable agaisnt both otherwordly and tainted being.

The thread still exist.

So, unofficial answer is that it does work, official answer is that they didn't put it in any of their errata doc yet.

But since they can make multiple erratas in a 2 pages errata document... Maybe it slipped thru the cracks or they are keeping it for a later "revised errata".
