Factions and timelines

By topacesteve, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hello, do the second edition rules, allow the First Order faction to go e.g. against the Rebel Faction?

Because they are of different chronological periods.

Yes. Any faction can fight any faction.

People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually — from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint — it's more like a big ball of wibbly-wobbly... timey-wimey... stuff.

This game is not just casual kitchen table... It would make absolutely no sense on a tournament level to block it...

That's not to say that a particular event may require players to play opposing factions (such as the Wave Release OP kits - they include provisions for a specific, faction-limited play experience). At the highest levels of competition, though, while each faction may have some restrictions (as seen in the Hyperspace limitations), every faction should continue to be a legal option to play.

Yes, that means Empire vs Rebublic, Separatist vs First Order, Rebel vs Resistance, and other wacky matchups that otherwise shouldn't be... and Scum will probably continue to be a mishmash of all the various eras.

Yes, you can always go flavor if you want, but that is still not rules. He was asking, is there a rule preventing it... and it would be impossible to manage such a rule in the current state of the game
