Composure and Endurance calculation change

By Franwax, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Roleplaying Game

Just wanted to check if anyone had some insight as to why the formulae for Composure and Endurance were switched between the beta and the final released product... I am pretty sure they were the opposite before.

I don’t mind at all and can find rationalization either way, but I’m just curious. If anyone has a view on the thought process behind this, I’m interested !

Not sure.

They were definitely the other way around before - in the Beta composure was Fire + Earth, and none of the Updates changed it.

I think the split on Vigilance/Focus is easier to understand, with Survey (essentially Spot/Awareness) being Water, then using that ring for Vigilance makes sense, in the same way "Earth for Hit Points, Air for Initiative" sort of narratively fits (I'm not saying it's necessarily mechanically sound but it makes narrative sense).

Water vs Fire on what's portrayed as Willpower Vs Exhaustion is a bit more nebulous. I think they have them the right way round but as you say you can rationalise either way.

I can faintly remember this change being brought up in the Beta and its background was Duel-related balancing as Fire covered a bit too much for duelists. I can also remember something about Fire managing Composure not meshing too well with how Fire Stance works.

Oof, yeah, fire stance and the Fire Ring linking to Composure would not fit well together at all fluff-wise. It's a bit iffy, since Fire is supposed to be the ring of passion, which is typically a break of composure, as well.

Well it’s also the Ring governing Focus, so this could go either way ;) But in general, I agree that the current configuration works better.
