My MO Regional Experience

By Vath, in Star Wars: Armada Battle Reports

Hey All!

Here’s my battle report from the KC regional I attended on December 1st. It was a great time and I got to meet a ton of amazing Armada players. For my first regional, I gotta say it solidly got me hooked for competitive in the future. (Too bad Adepticon is sold out!)

Without further ado, let’s start with what I flew.

Objectives were - Assault: Most Wanted. Defense: Contested Outpost. Navigation: Solar Corona

Imperial II (120)
• Admiral Motti (24)
• Agent Kallus (3)
• Gunnery Team (7)
• Quad Laser Turrets (5)
• Electronic Countermeasures (7)
• Leading Shots (4)
• XI7 Turbolasers (6)
= 176 Points

Gozanti Cruisers (23)
• Comms Net (2)
= 25 Points

Squadrons:
• Mauler Mithel (15)
= 15 Points

Total Points: 394

Round 1 - Bye

Woo! Great game here. Haha the funny part of this was that I had a SC bye and told the TO to use it if we end up with an odd number of people. Well, we ended up with an even number but someone else used their SC bye. So there we sat.

Result - 8TP

Round 2 - Kurt P

Hey look! My round 1 bye buddy. Who would have seen that coming? (Everyone. Everyone saw that coming.) So Kurt was flying his own double ISD list, but instead of ISD II’s and Motti, he had Cymoons with Vader, 1 less Gozanti, and Ciena/Valen instead of just my Mauler. He ended up deciding to go 1st and chose Most Wanted. Going into this matchup I knew that if I was going to win the slugfest, I would have to minimize the shots being taken at long range and jump to medium quickly. We start placing forces and he sets up well with a good slow-roll route that looks to make it tough for me to avoid a long range volley to start combat. I place Motti on a arcing route to flank Vader and my 2nd ISD to run right down the middle of his with the station in between us. Round 1 starts and he proceeds to slow roll like any Vader Cymoon list should, while I play some janky speed games to toss Motti a bit out ahead of my other ISD. Round 2 we are looking likely to engage, so I slow #2 down to speed one just behind the station and jump Motti to speed 3. After the dust settled, we exchanged shots between Motti and Vader at long range, and my ISD 2 might have gotten off 1 shot as well (I do not remember it being a big deal if it did.) Round 3 was the beginning of the slugfest. My activation advantage worked great here and was able to use SA to allow everything of his to shoot before either ISD of mine moved (To the tragedy of 1 of my Gozanti’s. RIP little guy). That meant that both my ISDs would be putting 8 dice into each of his. With Motti and ECM over his Cymoons, I knew I was sitting pretty good now. #2 even managed to land on the station, blocking both vader and his 2nd Cymoon from jumping onto it unless they took it down first. Round 4 started up and we exchanged some brutal shots on each other, but I was inching ahead due to my ECMs. Round 5 came and he was able to take down 1 of my ISDs, but my remaining cleaned up both of his to grant me the table and a 311 point victory. Most Wanted single handedly took that MOV game for me. In the post discussion we agreed that Contested Outpost probably would have been the better choice due to it negating station repairs and would have caused me to want to slow roll as well.

Result:10-1

Round 3 - Frank S

I was really debating what to do going into this game. I came to this regional with the goal of making top 8, and now I was looking to have a chance to win it all! But then I saw my opponents fleet. Oofda. Frank was also running Motti, but he was running a ISD II, a Vic II, and a Raider II. (The key upgrade difference to remember is that he ran EWS instead of ECM. You’ll see what I am talking about soon.) He had 1 Gozanti and then Morna and 1 base Decimator. Talk about tanky! Luckily I had the bid and opted for 2nd (against my carpool buddies suggestion). He picks my Solar Corona and proceeds to set up in the middle, with his ships in the following order (L-R: ISD II, Vic II, Gozanti, Raider II). I take my opportunity to set up on the far left, with Motti again going for the arcing flank on his Motti while poor #2 has to look right down the face of his Motti with the Vic licking its chops right next to it. No Station to hop on this time. We start Round 1 with the corona set to my left and his right. I immediately jump Motti to speed 3 and slow roll #2, unsure of how exactly I am going to pull this off. We exchange zero fire and move on to Round 2. This one ends up having some shots between the Motti’s, but nothing really comes of each. I manage to keep #2 out of big fire, but next round I am in a poor position for the Disposable Caps from the Vic. I spend a good amount of time debating whether or not to just jump to speed 3 and pray I can jump his line in round 4, or go speed 2 and stay at long range of Motti in order to hold everything in place for my own Motti to flank. I opt for speed 2 and that would end up resulting in the death of #2. Round 4 comes and all the shots are exchanged, but we are now solidly locked in place with my Motti right in his Motti’s side arc. I got the vic 2 hull away from death and debated ramming, but instead opted to attempt a line jump in between his vic and ISD that failed, hitting the ISD. Round 5 comes and a wild Raider appears! Coming in and cleaning up #2 easily. I take my opportunity to finish off his Motti with mine and then remember that without Motti, the Vic is now gone too! Whew, now to just repair and save as much MOV as possible from that raider looking to absolutely wreck my gozantis. Round 6 comes and at this point the Raider has 1 damage on it from ramming my ISD to death. He opts to try and blow up one Gozanti, barely missing and then rams my other one. The ram lands him on a rock and he takes a non-game changing crit. I go to activate my Gozanti and opt to toss my 1 blue dice at the shieldless side arc of the raider for fun before finishing up and figuring MOV. What I did not expect was a crit, and not just any crit, but a Structural Damage! This killed off his raider, giving me the table and a huge MOV boost! (Buddy, if you are reading this I FEEL SO BAD FOR THAT STRUCTURAL. I’ve been there man… I’ve been there.)

Result: 9-2

At 27 points I was starting to freak out a little. I now had a good chance of winning this thing. Alas, it was not meant to be as another player managed to 10-1 all 3 games and only lose 109ish MOV the entire day! He took home the trophy and I snagged 2nd at my first ever Armada Regional. What an absolute blast and a big thank you to everyone there. The games were amazing and the people I met even better. Hope to see you all again in the future!

Edited some glaring typos.

Hey great report. I’ve been seeing a lot of dual ISD lists around lately. Glad to see you did so well.

Thank ya! I took it solely due to my lack of time to practice and feel I got pretty lucky with it. Switching over to rebels now to give Raddus a good look. Hoping to make Omaha in January.
