Cloaking Device... meh, good or very underrated?

By Greedo_Sharpshooter, in X-Wing

small ship or medium ship only

Action: Spend 1 Charge to perform a Cloak action.

At the start of the Planning Phase, roll 1 attack die. On a Focus result, decloak or discard your cloak token.

I'm not seeing Cloaking Device much. How good is it? Seems a bit fragile. Thoughts?

decloak into a ship or obstacle, and you can fail to keep your cloak token... it's pretty good

All three depending on who has it.

Cikatro vizago crew makes cloaking device potentially very good.

assuming it still works the same way,

you can use a cloak action on your cloaking device ship

swap the cloaking device with an illicit on another ship from vizago (and the way its worded i think you can get it on a large ship as the medium or small only affects only list building.)

when the next turn comes your ship with the cloak token doesn’t lose it because the cloaking device that can cause you to lose it is on a different ship now.

cloaked quadjumpers are pretty cool.

i also have toyed with trying to figure out a scum list with cloaking multiple bombers who never decloak would work, but the lack of damage has me unconvinced.

without vizago its so so as you may decloak at a bad time, and the forced movement could cause problems.

There’s no forced movement, you can choose to just discard token

feels like CD would be decent vs ordnance hvy lists.

You're not required to move, but you can opt to decloak in a direction that would have no legal end spot for your ship, resulting in a failed decloak and retention of the cloak token.

I have debated using it in my BroBots list. I usually go with contraband cybernetics.

I’ve been running a Kavil, Palob 2 Quads list where both Quads end up ‘permanently’ cloaked.

You can only field one cloaking device - it's limited.

He's using Cikatro Vizago.

What Maui said.

It's great just for positioning. I wouldn't invest into some heavy jank that involves this like Cikatro shenanigans. Just find a ship that has an ability that supports it being a flanker and add Cloaking device to it and see what happens. Might work, might not. I've tried Graz with Cloaking device recently and I'm pleasantly surprised with the results.

Told ya Graz with cloak was solid.

I tried graz with cloak in my first 2.0 squad (and vizago sawpped the cloak around to cloak koshka up for a laugh) but I did a rather poor job with him (thanks vassal). I've since tried him with cybernetics, which are also nice. Vizago is a lot of fun swapping cloaks around

I run Cloking Device a lot. I particularly like it on the Khiraxz, and illicit-slot X-Wings. It can be hilarious with Chopper, as he burns your shields to power the damned thing again.

Like we were talking in the other thread, I use it a lot on Boba.I ve run this list a lot and have only lost one tournament game with it by own mistake.

Boba Fett — Firespray-class Patrol Craft 80
Outmaneuver 6
Perceptive Copilot 10
Proximity Mines 6
Cloaking Device 5
Marauder 3
Han Solo 4
Ship Total: 114
Half Points: 57 Threshold: 5
Bossk — YV-666 Light Freighter 70
Marksmanship 1
Jabba the Hutt 8
Cikatro Vizago 2
Contraband Cybernetics 5
Ship Total: 86
Cikatro can move the thing around when needed and also lets you keep it without rolling each turn if he moves it away from the cloacked ship. Not to mention Jaba can recharge it at will, although from own experience you hardly need to recharge it more than once. Again, cloaking device on the YV-666 at the end of r1 is awesome. And Jabaneticks on Scum Boba almost a combo from the past. I ve ended most matches with Boba having more than 5 stress tokens. Keep in mind its mostly a repositioning ability, since decloack straight and then go straight with Boba and if needed boost on top of that guaranties r1 for him. Not to mention YV-666 can go as fast at the same time next to him if you ve swapped the device on round 1. ;)

Scum Cloak has always been in the meh thanks to its temperamental restrictions. As for cloak after the nerf, there wasn't much you can do that a barrel-roll & boost combination could do better.

This is excellent.

I've used CD on cobra and kavil and it was decent.. usually I end up cutting it from my lists. but the above.. that's next level. I'll definitely be trying this list since those two were a fav of mine from 1.0.

I ran it a lot in first edition on my quad jumper builds (mostly for the 2 straight decloack to get range for a tractor), was very good then and still is good now.

I am not running it much right now as I am rarely running quadjumpers, I am kind of on an empire high right now and wanting to try new things with the other 2 factions and for me cloacky quadjumpers are not a new thing.

I think people drastically undervalue the ability to move 2 straight (and to a lesser extent the barrel rolls) on the first round of combat if you have a ship that really wants to be in close range its a very good way to make that happen.

This is also an edition where there are very few ways period to add boosts and barrel rolls to ships. Small Ships can take Afterburners, and that's about it.

Cloaking Device is just about the only other one. It takes a turn of preparation, but there aren't really other upgrades which do something similar. Whether or not it's worth the investment is another question, but it's one of the few tools out there.

I loved it on Tweek in 1.0 and would have it on Guri noif they had an illicit.

I’ve always thought the Cikatro Viza go shennanigans felt off; I am surprised they lived into 2.0.

I feel that people tend to stay away from in when building lists for a tournament because of its unpredictability. There will be a moment in a long tournament where you are going to want to stay cloaked and it will break on you.

In it's current state, I feel as though the illicit cloaking device is an interesting way to "store" a boost or barrel roll for another round. That way, you can be a bit more unpredictable. There is also the quadjumper, as others have mentionned. Palob could be annoying as well.

Now is it worth 5 points of annoyance, considering that attacking is also a problem? So far, in my tests, my answer would be no.

Vizago, for 2 pts (plus say two Deadman's Switch) you can set up your two gunrunners with cloak, before shifting them over to a third ship (Kavil or whoever).

You now have two well protected quads that are VERY flexible in positioning the round they decloak.
